Crime Thai Army Condemns Fatal Beating of Conscript, Instructors Jailed
File photo for reference only The Royal Thai Army (RTA) has extended condolences to the family of Vorapach Padmasakul, an 18-year-old conscript who died last year following a brutal beating during disciplinary training. In response to this tragic incident, two military instructors and eleven senior conscripts received sentences ranging from 10 to 20 years in prison. Maj Gen Winthai Suvaree, the army spokesman, addressed the incident, denouncing it as a grave violation of military discipline, law, and the army chief’s policy. He emphasised the utterly unacceptable nature of such actions, underscoring the RTA's commitment to preventing future occurrences. Vorapach, a new recruit stationed with the 3rd Infantry Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, King’s Guard, died on August 2, 2024. His medical report revealed severe injuries, including brain swelling, fractured ribs, a punctured lung, a fractured collarbone, and spinal damage. The RTA has firmly supported legal proceeding against those responsible, ensuring an immediate and thorough investigation. Military legal mechanisms facilitated the apprehension and prosecution of the offenders. Despite attempts by some perpetrators to flee, coordinated efforts between the army and police swiftly led to their capture. The army’s strong stance reflects a commitment to uphold discipline and justice, expressing hope that such incidents will cease to occur. The RTA aims to learn from this tragedy, promoting a safer and more accountable environment for all service members. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Bangkok Post 2025-05-29 -
