A female shopkeeper has been arrested in Khlong Luang district, Pathum Thani, after she was caught secretly selling illegal e-cigarettes to schoolchildren while operating a grocery store as a front. The arrest followed complaints from concerned parents and school officials.

At 16:00 on 26 May, District Chief Ms. Apisara Ketsin ordered Mr. Amornrithiphon Khieorungphet, the district security officer, together with members of the Territorial Defence Volunteer Corps, to launch an investigation into reports that students were using e-cigarettes at a local school.

Officials coordinated with informants and launched a surveillance operation which led them to the suspect’s shop. Authorities apprehended the woman and charged her with multiple offences related to the illegal sale and possession of untaxed and prohibited tobacco products.

The charges include:

1. Concealing, distributing, or knowingly receiving goods associated with customs violations, under Sections 242 and 246 of the 2017 Customs Act.

2. Selling or providing services involving baraku (hookah), electronic baraku, or e-cigarettes, including liquids for use with such devices, in violation of Order No. 24/2567 issued by the Consumer Product and Service Safety Committee on 8 July 2024.

3. Possession for sale of untaxed goods, and

4. Possession of goods on which tax has not been paid.

Seized from the premises were:

•  Disposable e-cigarette device obtained in a controlled purchase, by investigators.

• A 500 baht marked banknote used in the operation

• E-cigarette pods

• Refillable e-cigarette devices

• 73 disposable e-cigarettes

• 460 packs of foreign and export-labelled cigarettes

The operation was conducted jointly by the Khlong Luang District Office and the Pathum Thani Excise Department (Zone 2). The suspect and confiscated goods were handed over to local police investigators for legal proceedings.

The case shows the continued crackdown on e-cigarettes.
