'We carry our coffins with us': For Gaza's paramedics, every shift could be their last

Sky News has spent several days filming with emergency crews based at Shifa Hospital, Gaza's largest medical complex and one that has itself come under repeated attack.

They operate in one of the most dangerous places in the world, where the medics themselves are no longer spared.

In Gaza, the frontline is not just where the bombs fall - it's where the ambulances arrive.

The Gaza medics are incredibly courageous along with MSF volunteer doctors and other NGOs.. . Sadly local medics suffer a high casualty rate. It must be an enormous toll on their mental health being first responders, especially handling dead children every day who in many cases have been dismembered by the Israeli bombing. The agony of the innocents in Gaza is mind blowing, just have to watch the news videos.

   They are being martyred .

They will be going straight to Heaven .

Died fighting the enemy .

No questions asked, straight to Heaven

Its a privilege for them

Currently I'm reading Robert Fisk's latest book on the M.E. - Power of the Night. The chapter covering Gaza - The Dog In the Manger is powerful, as is all of Fisk's factual reporting. Sadly Fisk died in 2020, but I strongly recommend reading his published coverage of the M.E.

Do you beleive that Hamas calls for the murder of all Jews?

Shifa military base, posing as a hospital?

Please confirm that there are no military command and control operations in the lower levels of the hospital and that Hamas personnel do not use the facility for rest and resupply.

Unfortunately the Israelis forbid any foreigners from entering Gaza so claims such as yours cannot be independently verified.

Please ask the Israelis to permit the entry of foreign media.

Foreign media are not in a position to verify the  military use of hospitals,. They did not do it before.  There is now documented evidence that hospitals were used for command and control, and barracks for Hamas.  In all the previous years of  foreign media access,  not once did any  journalist report on the issue. This was attributable to Hamas not allowing access and there not being any interest to  investigate.

Access to the Gaza Strip for journalists has been all but impossible without doing so under the supervision of the Israeli military.

A letter signed by more than 60 broadcasters and news organisations from around the world calling for access to Gaza to report on the war has been published in full.

Entry to the narrow strip for journalists has been all but impossible without the permission and supervision of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF).

I don't remember another conflict where both sides are so totally in the wrong.

It's just a tragic mess, with nobody having right or goodness on their side.

True, and the hatred is probably so engrained on both sides now, right down to young children.

There's been plenty of international journalists that have reported from there, they just need to be embedded with the IDF, same as all wars. Picking out Israel only is typical.

It was the same in Iraq with the US military, any journos had to be carefully vetted and were then only considered if they agreed to be embedded.

But hey if International journalists still want to go and mix with Hamas and the local population hoping they are not going to be taken hostage, let them go. Hamas will love it.

Maybe considered so by some, but I suggest they would much prefer to be saving lives. Though highly likely you will not, but those interested can watch videos of the first responders in Gaza, they don't talk about preferring death to life. i.e. martyrdom.
