Recent Experience With AIS 5G Wireless Modems and Unlimited Data

Recommended Posts

I'm probably going to be moving again and may well be in a position where I'd rather just buy a 5G router for use in my condo.

I have AIS, and a year r so ago I saw that they had 5G Routers for use at home. So I went to the AIS stores in all the malls, but most of them acted like I was crazy or they maybe the simply didn't understand what I was talking about.  I couldn't find one in any AIS store in Pattaya.

I eventually stumbled on a Netgear Nighthawk 5G router that would be suitable for home use and would take an AIS SIM card.  Unlocked, on Amazon, it was expensive.

I suppose I don't mind paying if I can find something that actually works and I can find an AIS SIM card with unlimited 5G and no throttling of the speed after a certain a certain amount of usage.

Could I just go to TukCom and walk around until I found some shop that sold those?

Thanks.  Is it 5G?  I had an AIS 4G router, and let's just say it didn't always work too well, for some reason.  Very slow.

I found this on Shopee.  Kind of expensive, but if it works with AIS and that's the best I can do, I'd buy it.

Post back if you find one.  I bought a 4G pocket router and the guy in the kiosk told me that True was the only SIM that would give me unlimited monthly, with (I think) a 10-15MB/S speed.  All the AIS options were either capped at 100G/mo or ridiculously throttled after a small limit. He sold all of them, AIS, True and DTAC and he suggested True.

I've never looked into 5G because the speed limits I have found are easily met by 4G.  But I'm certainly open to upgrades as 5G gets ubiquitous.  Let us know what you find.

I'd be especially interested in the monthly cost of an account that can actually take advantage of 5G speeds without limits or throttling.  I suspect they're out there, mostly for businesses.

Here's what Perplexity said:

Therefore, if you want a truly unlimited 5G data SIM with no throttling from AIS in Thailand, you should opt for their official unlimited 30-day plan priced around 1699 THB (~$52 USD).

So apparently, they have such a plan, but it isn't cheap.

If my phone is any indication, sometimes the 5G isn't so fast and it switches down to 4G.  I don't much care, so long as it does what I want it to do without a lot of trouble.

My Fiber works pretty well, and this is what I got just now going through a dedicated IP address in the USA:

Your post and its links are a bit of a mess but it appears to suggest a Netgear XR700 router which is a regular wired router and is "end of service" status with Netgear.

I run a few 4G routers with no issues but I'm not a heavy user.  Do you need 5G or just want it?

Last I looked around True were indeed the only unlimited options.  If you see any others please post them as I have a couple needing replaced in the next two months.

Somehow, the other day I found an "unlocked" Netgear Nighthawk router on Amazon for $699, suggesting it was compatible with different SIM cards.  Today, I can't find it.  Anyway, that's what I might need.  A 5G modem that can pull signals out of the air via a SIM card and data service.  AIS used to make their own, but I don't see those anymore, at least on the online store.

I run AIS 5G Max Unlimited @ 1199 excluding vat, Router TPLINK NX510v for half a year now. Average speed 250-350Mbps. Oh, plug n play no need configure anything except your Wifi SSID and password.

No fiber to my place due to private land / route and need only pole need to cross Khlong which all ISP will not do.

I do see on FB AIS unlimited 100Mbps @ 4k ish period of 12 months, have not try this tho. But i do use the old DTAC 30Mbps unlimited at my Resort in Khao Kho on 4G router for 2 years.

Have you got a link to this?  As above, I wan't aware of anyone offering a 5G unlimited SIM apart from True (I just bought one this morning).

Are you sure? Or did you buy a SIM that has 5G connectivity, but with a capped speed 4G package?

Misleading. There is no such thing as an 'unlimited SIM' and yours most certainly is not an unlimited package if you bought it from the official AIS outlet.

People make wild claims here.

the 100mbps unlimtied was fb ads, if i see again will post here

You won't. Because such a thing does not exist. Forget about it.

AIS Prepaid offers only the 100GB per month Marathon SIM 12 month pack, for 2750 baht.

Postpaid, you can get Unlimited 5G from 1199 + VAT monthly.

What phone do you use? Your phone performance should be indicative of the Max speed you can get with AIS  at your home location.

Run a https://testmy.net speed test with a Max Speed package(or no package) to check.

If you are getting low speeds at home, no router is going to improve that. If you are getting high speeds on your phone, then buy a router to match. Meaning one capable of 3CA of maybe 2CA and/or the ability to manually choose  bands.

Example: If using AIS, Band 41 might give you 20Mbps, whilst Band 1, 10Mbps. But if your router can only use one band at a time and decides to use Band 1, you are out of luck. If you have a router that can choose the bands manually, you could choose to lock on to band 41.

You wouldn't want to do that with a phone when you are moving and want the ability to lock onto available signals. But with a fixed point router, that's not an issue, so go for just the fastest.

All in all, Unlimited 4G/5G is going to cost you 1199 baht + VAT. Considerably more than Fibre.

This is why the NT Wireless Thunder package became sought after. Unlimited Max speed data for 999 baht for 12 months. No more.

Finn Mobile offer unlimited up to 20Mbps for 259 baht + VAT or Unlimited Max Speed at 499 baht + VAT, though the speeds you get will be subject to available signal and suitable equipment.
