Early last year I bought a used Altis to use when I am on holiday. Car is ok, very fast, no idea the size of the engine. But the lights are awful. Main beam is ok but dipped is little better that driving on side lights. I dislike driving the car any distance after dark. Where there are no street lights it is dangerous unless I can use the main beam. Can I get an LED conversion? If so are there special lighting suppliers and the likely cost?

Yes probably, don't be tempted to just change the bulbs for LED as that will very likely make no difference or be even worse...due to the properties of LED lighting vs filament you probably need to change the reflection lens built into the headlights themselve ie change the whole headlight assembly for one that was designed for LED.

The head light glass is faded and scratched anyway so may be a good idea to change the whole thing.

Or put some higher Watt halogen bulbs in,but you need to be careful not to overdo that as it can damage the wiring and / or the plastic of the headlights.

Get a set of Phillips Ultinon Rally 3550 LED’s no conversion needed as they are direct fitment easy install and probably the best replacements available. Bright beam doesn’t scatter and blind oncoming traffic.

Don’t be tempted to buy cheap LED conversions, there’s usually a fan to keep them cool and the fan will quickly wear out, and then the bulbs will fail.

When I needed to upgrade the headlights on a fifteen-year-old car last year, my auto electrician said to avoid any DIY LED kits, as I would blind oncoming motorists because the car was never designed for LED lights. He installed some higher wattage halogen bulbs, which were a great improvement. The downside, he said, was they had a shorter life, but it was an old car that doesn't get driven after dark much, so not an issue.

That's gotta be plastic.  Glass doesn't generally get scratched and virtually never fades.

That would be the first thing I'd address, otherwise no light bulbs are going to work well.  Either replace the lenses or find a YouTube on how to renew the old lenses by polishing.

Ha ha, never heard any one say an Altis is very fast 😂

I am suprised how fast it accelerates. gf also has an Altis and that takes all day to accelerate. The gf is constantly telling me to slow down.

Yes I saw how to polish plastic lenses. To be honest whilst the lenses are faded I don't think that is the issue. Main beam is ok. Just dipped lights are useless.

The trouble is I am not sure how I can make a garage understand what it is I want done ie improve the lights. As far as I can see judging by the fall of light on the road by other cars all Thai cars have crappy lights. May be they put cheap under powered bulbs in to save money.

I have the same problem. The low beams seem to be shuttered down, particularly on the drivers side. At night it is hard, if it is raining, it is really tough to see. The passenger side beam is focused much higher.
