Some crazies out there - but this guy seemed exceptionally unhinged...

Where was it ?

Wear your full face helmet, AirWave Protective riding jacket (elbow, shoulder, back protector), Riding Gloves, city riding boots (as below)...    Protect tourself where practical and ride as defensivey as you can... thats all you can do.

Here's a link to the Innov (expensive)...  but it can prove your innocence when another to$$er rides into you, cuts you off etc...

https://innovv.com/collections/2k-dashcam

These boots look like normal footwear, but are reinforced, so better than trainers...

It was in Chalong, Phuket, I've got all the gear which I don't wear I prefer light clothing it might be unwise but thats me, I always wear a good crash helmet, I've got a full face Shark helmet very good quality, I am not a fast rider, I keep up with the traffic, excessive speed scares me.

I've got 2 bikes the ADV160 and the ADV350 both amazing.

I'm a sensible person and made a very intelligent comment.

If being able to maintain awareness of your surroundings is becoming challenging for you, maybe it's time to hang up the helmet and catch the bus.

Lol I'm going to take a course it's called " recognise the sound of over 100 different motorbikes plus 50 different cars whilst driving in traffic and its windy" can't wait.

The most dangerous people on Thai roads are some of the foreigners.

Do you have to go around warning people about yourself, being one of the most dangerous people on the roads because you are a foreigner ?

OR... are you different and the sweeping generalisation is fitting of every other foreigner except yourself ???

Both excellent bikes...

I too have the kit, but also 'go light' when travelling very locally - however, I'm very strict with myself about the moment I think I might hit a 'main road' (i.e. away from my sub-soi's), then I'll ensure to but the 'kit on' as uncomfortable as that may be...    Thats Bangkok though...

That said: when I sandboxed in Phuket (Rawai & Bang Tao) - I used only helmet (open face), Gloves and trainers...

I think we all end up compromising a lot of the time and threads like this are an additional reminder...

a) That there are unhinged mental cases out there.

b) That there are delusional folk out there who don't think Thai's on bikes are an issue and only think other foriegners are dangerous.

c) never get complacent.

Wife had a car accident last week, very minor - would have hurt if I was on a bike...   a car suddenly change lanes and cut across her (100% not her fault) - it just shows ppl do anything at any time - completely unpredictable.

Regarding location:

Pattaya & Patong seem to have a concentration - but Phuket in general seems to have a long of unhinged characters...

I would have been far more surprised to read that this occurred in Chiang Mai, Hua Hin, Kanchanaburi or Khon Kaen for example.

Just keep your eyes and ears open next time and I'm sure you'll be fine.

Good - they're ankle savers if we ever needed to put our foot down at anything faster than 20kmh...

I saw a guy on a Ducati today. He wasn't going fast, but those things should be banned. That's an accident waiting to happen.

Manufacturers are more than happy to profit from people's big egos who feel the need to go 10 times faster than anyone else on the roads.

Me too...    But, over the past 10 years I've 'devolved' down from a 'real bike' to a step-through scooter...

A real bike is just impractical in BKK...  but one think I noticed was my visibility - On a real bike, wearing proper kit, I was visible to other road users....    other motorbikes gave me more space, cars gave me space etc...

... Almost as if they knew I wasn't some 'worthless Somchai on a click' (no disrespect meant there just a descriptor), but on a real-bike (bigger) with kit - I suspect the drivers of other vehicles subconsciously 'noticed' someone of 'position' (i.e. sufficient to have a better bike etc)...   though that could have been my own bias... I've noticed the same when driving very expensive, vs cheap smaller cars....

Now I have a scooter (step through style motorcycle for the pedantic) and mostly use it for very local journeys...   its too hot and the car is just too comfortable - I don't care if it takes me twice as long in the car anymore...

Every bike goes way over the speed limit, it's all down to the individual.

Mirrors are good for that, if you know how to use them.

Oh no I've got mirrors, what do you do with them? I thought they were for looking to see how handsome you are.

yeah, because they were AFRAID of you because guys on real motorcycles are the most dangerous people on the roads.

it's better to be feared than respected, right? what do Ducati owners and The Godfather have in common?

I've had the big bikes Z1000, Susuki GSX 1000, never went fast on them to old for superbikes now.

Arguable - as a Honda Click can hit 100kmh down sukhimvit road in BKK if they wanted to...   A Ducati will get there a lot quicker and stop better....

... But EV's are quicker off the mark - we have a BYD Seal thats faster than SuperCars with 0-100km in 3 seconds...

So....  I think that ship has well sailed...     The 'sweeping ban' is a Thai response, that impacts everyone even the responsible...  unfair...

That said: I don't think it will be too long before vehicles are Geo-located and speed limited to the 'area' they are in...

Is that a new tech ?

Imagine driving the BMW1000rr over 110 bhp it's crazy, same as the Ducati streetfighter again over 110bhp I've seen them driving so fast it's a blur as they pass you.

The tech is already there...     the legal framework is the complicated issue.

For example: look at your SatNav in some countries (i.e. UK) and it knows immediately when we cross into a 30pmh zone (on the display)...

There are complexities of course (imagine going down a motorway at 70mph, and the car crosses under a 30mph road bridge... but that can easily be programmed out.

Ultimately - its similar to 'driverless taxis'  - the tech is already there, the legal framework isn't.
