Community Royal Thai Navy Wins National Innovation Award for Groundbreaking Cancer Treatment System
Picture courtesy of Sattahip News The Royal Thai Navy has achieved national acclaim beyond its traditional role of maritime defence, earning a prestigious Public Sector Innovation Award for 2025 from the Office of the Public Sector Development Commission (OPDC) for its cutting-edge medical advancement: the SmartMed Infusion System. Developed by the Naval Medical Department, this intelligent chemotherapy drug delivery system is hailed as a major leap forward in cancer treatment, particularly in procedures involving Transarterial Chemoembolisation (TACE) for liver cancer patients. The SmartMed Infusion System stands out for its: • Fully automated chemotherapy administration, • Enhanced safety and precision, significantly reducing human error, • Minimal contact with hazardous drugs for medical personnel, and • Successful implementation in real surgical environments. This medical innovation is the result of tireless collaboration by a multidisciplinary team, spearheaded by Captain Dr Tharengkiat Jamulitrat, Head of Radiology at Somdej Phra Pinklao Hospital and Ms Salinda Kitiboonya, a radiologic technologist, alongside a team of expert engineers. Their work represents a beacon of hope for patients and healthcare providers alike. Support and collaboration from the Taiwanese government also played a key role in realising this innovation, underscoring the importance of international cooperation in advancing global healthcare. The SmartMed Infusion System exemplifies the Royal Thai Navy’s evolving mission, no longer limited to safeguarding the nation’s waters, but also leading in medical innovation for the benefit of all Thais. This achievement reflects a bold vision to elevate Thailand’s healthcare system to international standards and ensure safer, more effective treatments for critical conditions like cancer. UPDATE Murder Suspect in Car Shooting of Partner Detained Picture courtesy of Amarin A car salesman accused of fatally shooting his partner and leaving her body in a parked car has been remanded in custody, while showing signs of severe mental distress. Police have opposed bail on grounds of the seriousness of the crime and potential flight risk. The suspect, 34-year-old Mr. Meepaphat, was taken to the Thonburi Criminal Court on the morning of 11 June, by investigators from Phetkasem Police Station. He faces multiple charges, including murder, illegal possession of a firearm (registered but not under his name), unlawful public carrying of a weapon and discharging a firearm without cause. The body of the victim, his girlfriend, was discovered inside a vehicle on Soi Phetkasem 67, Sub-soi 8, Bangkok. CCTV footage and forensic evidence appear to support the charge of murder. Forensic analysis indicates the shot was fired from the rear seat, striking the woman in the back of the head and exiting through her right temple before shattering the driver’s side window. According to police, Mr. Meepaphat spent the night pacing restlessly in his holding cell, showing signs of agitation and anxiety. When his elder brother and relatives visited him at the police station earlier in the day, they reported that he was incoherent and unresponsive. The family has since indicated they are unlikely to seek bail. As the suspect was escorted to the police van for transfer to court, reporters attempted to question him about his motives. Mr. Meepaphat remained largely silent, offering no insight into the events or his reasoning. He did, however, quietly express a desire to apologise to the victim and said he still loved their child. Visibly emotional, he clutched a handkerchief in his fist as the van drove off. Though he denied all charges during initial questioning and gave what police described as “confused and circular” answers, officers do not believe the suspect was intoxicated or suffering from any psychiatric disorder. His official statement was given in the presence of a lawyer and his brother. Investigators are continuing their work to confirm the bullet trajectory and examine the vehicle in further detail. A second vehicle, which the suspect reportedly drove alongside the victim’s car to stop it, prior to the shooting, is still missing. Crime Drug Dealer Shot Dead After Knife Attack on Police During Pursuit in Nonthaburi
Picture courtesy of Matichon. A 34-year-old suspected drug dealer was fatally shot by police after a dramatic chase and violent confrontation in Nonthaburi province on the evening of 10 June. The incident occurred around 19:30, when patrol officers from Mueang Nonthaburi Police Station attempted to stop a man suspected of possessing illegal narcotics. The suspect, later identified as Mr Rattawat, also known as “Ae Sai Ma”, fled on a Honda Wave 125 motorcycle, leading police on a high-speed pursuit. Officers followed the suspect from Tiwanon Road through several intersections until he veered into Soi Wat Chomphuwek, in Tha Sai Subdistrict, Mueang District. Attempting to evade capture, the suspect lost control of his motorcycle after hitting a speed bump and crashed in front of a factory. As police approached, Mr Rattawat attempted to flee on foot while carrying a black shoulder bag and a plastic bag containing large quantities of yaba (methamphetamine pills) and crystal meth. When officers caught up with him, he drew a knife and tried to stab one of them. Sergeant Nattawat Ketkaew, one of the pursuing officers, shouted at the suspect to drop the weapon. When the suspect ignored the command and attempted to lunge again, Sgt Nattawat fired in self-defence, hitting the suspect. Officers immediately administered first aid and called emergency medical services. Despite being rushed to Phra Nang Klao Hospital, Mr Rattawat succumbed to his injuries. At the scene, police recovered the knife used in the attack, the black bag, and plastic-wrapped narcotics. His damaged motorcycle, bearing a Pathum Thani licence plate, was found 10 metres away from the point of arrest. Police Corporal Nakarin Panan, the officer nearly stabbed during the altercation, credited his narrow escape to a Buddhist amulet and a protective charm made from his mother’s tooth, both of which he wore around his neck.
