In a significant diplomatic stride, Thailand's Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has announced successful direct discussions with Cambodia aimed at resolving the ongoing border dispute. In meetings with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Senate President Hun Sen, both parties committed to dialogue as the primary means to address the issue.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn emphasised the smooth progress of recent talks, underscored by the Thai government's dedication to diplomatic rather than confrontational solutions. "Our dedication to a peaceful approach has shown positive results," she remarked, reflecting on the government's concerted efforts over the previous week to ease tensions in the border areas.

Involving several sectors, these efforts have fostered a more stable and orderly environment. On a strategic level, security agencies, particularly military forces stationed along the border, have been instructed to pursue bilateral cooperation with their Cambodian counterparts, ensuring discussions are anchored in international legal frameworks to maintain both stability and national sovereignty.

The 38-year-old Thai leader highlighted the outcomes of her direct conversations with Hun Manet and Hun Sen, underlining their mutual goal to protect national sovereignty while maximizing benefits for citizens of both nations. Thai security agencies and military forces have been key players in ongoing discussions with Cambodian forces, with the established rapport between military units facilitating effective communication and cooperation.

Supporting these diplomatic forays, Hun Sen has orchestrated the involvement of senior Cambodian military figures, such as former Deputy Prime Minister General Nyek Bun Chhay, to engage actively in resolving the dispute. These officials visited the contested regions to provide first-hand assessments, reporting their findings directly to Hun Sen.

As part of this diplomatic undertaking, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the Joint Border Committee meeting is slated for Saturday, June 14. This gathering, agreed upon by both nations, is poised to advance ongoing talks.

However, concerning Cambodia's intention to seek the adjudication of the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the Thai government remains firm in its position of non-recognition of the ICJ's jurisdiction over the matter. The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to manage the issue through existing diplomatic channels, employing internationally recognised approaches yielding positive results, though keeping some discussion particulars confidential.

While managing border control measures, Thai officials have ensured that border crossings will follow an agreed schedule, avoiding any permanent closures—addressing and preserving the economic importance of cross-border trade and the livelihoods of local communities.

Adding a domestic perspective, the Yamfao Phaendin Foundation, directed by Sondhi Limthongkul, has issued a letter urging the government to steadfastly uphold national sovereignty, reflecting public interest in maintaining both national integrity and positive diplomatic relations.

In this climate of proactive diplomacy and international cooperation, Thailand and Cambodia demonstrate a commitment to resolving their differences peacefully, aiming for outcomes that bolster regional stability and mutual prosperity.

Promising signs for the people of Isaan—stability at the border is always welcome. Yesterday I had to head out to customs near the border in Nakhon Phanom. I found a moment of calm watching the water buffalo do what they do best—grazing peacefully, while their owners stood quietly under their umbrellas, keeping an eye on them. That said, we’ve seen diplomatic gestures before that didn’t lead to real change. The reality on the ground tends to get shakier once international courts get involved. Let’s hope this stays at the level of quiet talks—and doesn’t end up like one of those buffaloes, stuck knee-deep and waiting for someone else to move first.

How about Thailand giving its other neighbor, Myanmar, some stern advice on PEACE making.

That's precisely the problem. For both parties, 'stability' and 'national sovereignty' are incompatible, because neither party's 'sovereignty' is satisfied with the status quo.

It was a long time since her age was mentioned.

But there haven't been a war yet.

Somehow I have that sneaking suspicion that the two fams, the Shins and the Huns, orchestrated this whole affair at the behest of Daddy Shin, to make his girl look good in the news. Too bad about the dead soldier, he took one for the team, even if they never asked him... :coffee1:

Attention seeking wannabes. The world is consumed with territorial issues of Russia/ukraine, Israel/Palestine, Pakistan/india etc. Feeling neglected they thought what can we do to draw some attention to us. Masters of copycats. 😂😂😂

Cambodia should be satisfied with the status quo in which it received favorable the adjudication by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that defined the border in favor of Cambodia.

It is Thailand that is claiming such status quo violates it's sovereignty.

Wasn't a Cambodia soldier killed?

Wonder why one country does not want to recognise the ICJ as an international instrument of justice. It could resolve the issue forever.
