Illegal Slaughterhouse Uncovered in Nakhon Sawan as Authorities Crack Down

The Department of Livestock Development (DLD) in Nakhon Sawan has uncovered an illegal slaughterhouse operating within the city, seizing eight pig carcasses weighing over 700 kilogrammes. Dr Somchuan Ratanamangkalanon, Director General of the DLD, reported that this discovery followed a tip-off regarding unlicensed animal slaughtering activities.

On June 11, officials from the Nakhon Sawan animal quarantine station, in collaboration with the provincial livestock office, inspected the suspected site, uncovering illegal operations. These activities breached Section 15 of the Animal Slaughter Control Act of 2016, a violation that carries a potential penalty of up to three years in prison, a fine of up to 200,000 baht (approximately US$6,165), or both. The operation also failed to comply with Sections 31 and 39, which restrict slaughtering to authorised facilities only.

In addition to the confiscation of pig carcasses, officials secured various pieces of evidence and equipment tied to the illicit slaughtering activities. The incident has been reported to the investigative officers at Mueang Nakhon Sawan Police Station, where further legal action is being pursued.

This enforcement action aligns with the policies set by Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Narumon Pinyosinwat and Deputy Minister Itthi Sirilatayakorn, who emphasise consumer safety and the strict application of laws to demolish illegal slaughtering operations across the nation. By enforcing these measures, the government aims to improve the safety and hygiene standards of slaughterhouses overall.

Authorities encourage residents to report any illegal activities using the DLD 4.0 application, available 24/7 on both iOS and Android platforms. This tool facilitates prompt investigations and actions by the police, reinforcing the crackdown on illegal operations and safeguarding public health.
