I'd rather be safe than sorry, just want to ask first.

Bank:  KrungThai (light blue) and I have the NEXT app (I think it's really good)

I have a Bangkok Bank account, haven't used in over a year, so...... let's not think about it UNLESS we have to.

I have personal checks from my American bank, and somehow kept them all these years.  ATM expired in 2020.

Bank in America is private.

OK, I'm thinking of just depositing a check to myself and waiting the 2-3 weeks and pay like 300 baht and whatever.....I'm OK with that.

However, I am curious about Wise.  Too bad Zelle doesn't work over here.  At least I don't think it does.

I don't really see a risk with the check.  Worst case you call America and cancel the check and, welll, I wouldn't try it again.

What's the risk with Wise?  The money leaves my American account and goes in limbo?  and stays in limbo for months?

Any other thoughts?

Can't write specifically about WISE and US.

I send EUR since about 5 years.

One case of unusual delay of 3 days or so.

Otherwise absolutely flawless.

I mostly do pension transfer once monthly sometime during first week of the month.

Use it for extension based on monthly transfer in the second year now.

What other bank than Bangkok Bank you have?

There IS a problem with WISE. Not all banks can be used.

For some banks transfers are limited to 50k Baht per transaction. Multiple transfers OK.

With Bangkok Bank, Kasikorn and SCB you are on the safe side (1.5 to 2 million per transaction).

If I read the OP correctly, one of the points was to deposit a US check into your Thai acct. and wait a few weeks for it to clear, all for 300bt. Have you checked lately? I don't think this is an option any more, and it would cost a lot more than that. IIRC, BKK Bank wanted a few thousand baht 6 years ago.

I think the OP would get more focused responses by asking...

I want to transfer $ xxxx USD from bank Y in the U.S. for the purpose of (living expense, extension qualification, condo purchase etc.).

And the OP should check with their bank Y (in the U.S.) re: outbound transfers. And check with Krung Thai on their procedures/limits for inward foreign remittances.

The simplest solution might be a SWIFT transfer?

Using old paper checks seems like a stretch?

And I'd recommend ensuring the Bangkok Bank account is in good standing - phone number match, facial rec. etc.

Zelle is working here on my Bank of America account app, making payments to Wells Fargo accounts and others in the US. However, they do keep adjusting who can do what, when and with how much, so unless one uses it regularly (I don't), it should work (or not).

interesting.  I'll think I'll try Wise with like 40,000 just to test it out.

I've done the SWIFT Transfer before (wiring money), when I was at my branch in America.  That was like pulling teeth.  This year I won't transfer a lot, but I will transfer a lot next year.  So let's start with a few hundred thousand baht this year as a trial run.  I'd rather spread it out in say 50k each. Next year I'll have an option to get an account wherever I want.  Goldman Sachs, wherever, and for 10+ years try to properly diversify it.  Forget all that for now....now let's say only 100 to 200k.  I was thinking of just writing a check for say 5k USD, but OK let's try Wise.

Now that I've decided on Wise, I'll check the American bank.  They do Zelle but I had problems opening up an account......Maybe I'll revisit that.

we made progress, thanks.  old cheques... nah.

My post had nothing to do with Wise. It was about doing a counter deposit with a check from a US bank...

Indirectly, it did.  If it's thousands of baht to mess with some old check, then no more old check.  Wise was plan B.  I don't have a plan C, except maybe Zelle if I can get it to work.

you have to read my mind.  the period "thanks, therefore......."

insert that.  lol

Why can't you sch a wire transfer online from your US bank? Why was it so hard like pulling teeth? Many banks & brokerage firms let you sch wire transfers online. I wire USD from Chase to Bangkok Bank whenever I need. Chase doesn't charge me an outgoing fee. BBL charges min 200b, max 500b, so a $2,400 xfer costs me ~ $6.00. I leave the $ in my USD acct and convert when I get a good exchange rate. It takes 1 day for the wire transfer to arrive. If i need money in seconds, i just get it from my THB acct at ATM, or I use my Chase debit card.  The 220b ATM fee is reimbursed by Chase. Most here probably use Wise.

I only did it in person, manager approval, took like 30 minutes, just felt inefficient.  I had to wire funds maybe five times that year.   maybe was $30 each back in the day.  I think I was only wiring 9500 USD.  gotta stay under that 10k. lol

OK, tks.  I'm gonna do something next week, no rush.  I'll look into this option.
