Europe Condemns Iranian Threats Against IAEA Chief Amid Nuclear Tensions

Britain, France, and Germany have strongly denounced threats against Rafael Grossi, head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog, after an Iranian newspaper with ties to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei called for his execution, accusing him of being an Israeli agent.

In a joint statement issued Monday, the foreign ministries of the three European powers expressed alarm at the situation, saying, “France, Germany and the United Kingdom condemn threats against the Director General of the IAEA Rafael Grossi and reiterate our full support to the Agency and the DG in carrying out their mandate.” The statement went on to call on Tehran to reverse course: “We call on Iranian authorities to refrain from any steps to cease cooperation with the IAEA. We urge Iran to immediately resume full cooperation in line with its legally binding obligations, and to take all necessary steps to ensure the safety and security of IAEA personnel.”

The warning came after Iran’s hardline Kayhan newspaper, often seen as echoing the views of the Supreme Leader, claimed Grossi had links to Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency and should be “tried and sentenced to death” if he entered Iran. Although Iranian officials have not officially endorsed the article, its publication has drawn serious concern in diplomatic circles.

Grossi has not issued a direct response to the accusation but emphasized that his main focus remains on restoring the International Atomic Energy Agency’s access to Iranian nuclear sites. “My top priority is ensuring IAEA inspectors can return to nuclear sites in Iran as soon as possible,” he said in comments issued through the agency.

Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, dismissed the suggestion that Grossi was under threat, stating there was “no official threat” from the government. However, Iran has been increasingly critical of the IAEA in recent months, particularly following the agency’s decision to censure Tehran for failing to meet its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Iran argues that the IAEA’s reports have emboldened Israel, whose airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites began shortly after the IAEA board passed its resolution.

In a phone call with French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian accused the IAEA of playing a destabilizing role. “The view of the Iranian government, parliament, and people is that the IAEA director has not acted impartially in relation to our country’s nuclear file, despite all the cooperation and interactions that have taken place, and this behaviour is in no way acceptable to us,” Iranian state media quoted him as saying.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi went further, branding Grossi unwelcome in Iran and accusing him of having engaged in “malign action” and playing a “regrettable role.” Meanwhile, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei added that Grossi could not expect Iran to ensure inspector safety under current conditions. “How can they expect us to ensure the safety and security of the agency’s inspectors when Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities were attacked a few days ago?” he said at a press conference.

Baghaei also confirmed that a bill approved by Iran’s Guardian Council—an influential body appointed by the Supreme Leader—now mandates a cessation of cooperation with the IAEA. “Iran shouldn't be expected to accept its obligations under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty when the U.N. nuclear watchdog has stopped short of condemning the attacks on Iran’s nuclear sites,” he declared.

Apparently Iran’s foreign minister has stipulated a full guarantee of no further US attacks on Iranian soil as a precondition for resuming nuclear negotiations with Washington.  I completely agree with that.

Bovine 💩 such as these Iranian Threats Against the IAEA Chief need to be a red line going the other way.

He apparently handed over data including names of scientists to Mosad which resulted in the murder of scientists and their families. At the very least he should be investigated. If allegations are true he’s responsible for their murder.

   The Mossad didn't need Grossi to tell them the names of Iran's nuclear scientists.  They just had to read newspapers and magazines. The men who were assassinated held very visible positions.  Most were academics attached to various universities or institutes.  Some edited scientific journals.  Iran made no attempt to conceal the identities of nuclear scientists and technicians.

There’s absolutely zero doubt that the guy gave Israel all the information they needed to attack their nuclear facilities and now they cry for Iran to continue to let them in so they can get more information out of them! The regime in Iran definitely needs to go, but they’re right when it comes to all the nuclear <deleted>. I wouldn’t let them in either anymore after that!

Perhaps you could provide a link to a credible  source which indicates Rossi gave Israel  information useful to its bombing of Iran's nuclear facilities.

Showing naivety when asking for source regarding Mosad operations. Put two and two together. IAEA is the only entity knowledgeable about sites, activities, and personnel. Fact that they’ve been kicked out despite knowing international backlash supports it. They complied from the beginning but it worked against them. IAEA is silent on Israel actually having nukes illegally says something too.

Two and two make 5 according to you then. To even attempt at claiming that Iran complied with IAEA shows just how little you really know.

I'm showing skepticism over there being "absolutely zero doubt" (my bold text) on the basis of one poster's opinion alone.  I wondered if anyone outside the Iranian press agreed with that assessment.  I'm also skeptical that you will come up with four when you "put two and two together."  Sounds more like it will be three or five, considering there's no evidence to back your "analysis."

If you honestly believe the only way the Mossad could get information on Iran's nuclear is through Grossi and the IAEA, then you are the one who is naive.  Preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear arms is crucial to the survival of Israel and its people.  The Mossad will devote all its considerable resources to obtaining whatever information is needed towards that end.

No need to worry about Iran destroying Israel. They’re doing a fine job destroying themselves with their policies. Feel sorry for good Israelis trying to live in peace and harmony. Iran moderately responded to Israeli attacks which accelerated the self destruction. Next time they may pull out the good stuff and really send the Zionist fleeing back to where they came from leaving the good Israelis to run their country.

What distinguishes "good Israelis" from "Zionists?"  I hope you're not thinking about "good Israelis" in the same way as Gen. Philip Sheridan is said to have referred to "good Indians,"  Where is it that Zionists would flee to that they came from?  What is the "good stuff" Iran may pull out?

Can you put two and two together to answer my questions?

Mossad's and Israel's initial attacks were amazing. I'm not saying this as a supporter but it's undeniable. Like the mobile phones and pagers exploding. As for the Supreme Leader who would expect anything else. He's a fundamentalist Islamist of the very worst kind.

Sure thing.
good Israeli-an Israeli  who like most civilized people values life, peace loving, respects humanity, and equality
Zionist- ethno-supremacist, expansionist, regional domination aspirations.
where?-most of them are immigrants from Europe and hold citizenships of other countries. Incidentally a lot have left already and if it wasn’t for closing the borders we’d see a mass exodus of them.
good stuff-they started unloading drones and old misslies to overwhelm the irons dome. In the last couple of days they unloaded second tier stuff. The good stuff is yet to come. If it wasn’t for not wanting to lose international support and possibility of direct USA intervention they could’ve flattened Israel. It’s basically two major cities. Not hard to do.

The crucial question is then "Who gets to decide which Israelis are good and which are Zionists?"  Is it the Iranian government?  Hamas? The Arab League?  Who?

Of course a different definition of Zionist than yours is possible.   I would define a Zionist as someone who believes in a sovereign national homeland where Jews can live in security from antisemitism.  Under that definition, probably 99% of Israel's Jews and a great many Jews outside Israel are Zionist.

About 80% of Israel's current Jewish population was both in Israel.  If an Israeli-born Jew is a Zionist, where would he be sent?  And about half of all Israeli Jews are descended from ancestors who were kicked out of Arab countries.  Where would they be sent?  Estimates of the number of Israeli Jews with dual nationality range from 460,000 to 770,000, or roughly  6% to 10% of the country's 7.7 million Jews.

In fact, the vast majority of Israeli Jews have nowhere else to go.  That's why they fight so hard to defend their homeland.

Why do you think the borders are closed to Israel's citizens, whether Jewish or any other religion?  Israeli citizens are free to come and go as they please.  In 2024, about 83,000 Jews are estimated to have emigrated from Israel. That's slightly over 1% of Israel's Jewish population. That's hardly run-away flight.   https://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/2024-12-31/ty-article/.premium/israels-population-growth-slows-as-emigration-soars-with-83-000-leaving-in-2024/00000194-1cf3-db03-a1f6-1cfb5dcf0000

You are seriously over-estimating Iran's military capabilities and the ease with which Israel could be defeated.  For 77 years, Israel has stood against 500,000 Arabs and 1.4 billion Muslim's, all of whom want to destroy the homeland of the world's Jews.  This article gives background on the relative military strength of Iran and Israel:

Iran's leaders should already know, but perhaps need to be reminded, never again is now.

Definition-Your Zionist definition almost matches my good Israeli definition 🫢. To narrow it down I’m talking about segments with Messianic (Christian and Jewish) motives that include conquering the old land (promised land) that includes neighboring countries today. The current regime is doing that against international law.
population-agree with most being born in Israel. But they can have other passports from their parents.  There’s a segment that are not and are brought in to settle illegally occupied lands.
border closure-I was referring to closing the borders during the 12-day conflict. It is well documented. A few managed to sail on ships to Cyprus.
war- no doubt Israel is a formidable force as they have demonstrated several times. But today’s world is different and Iran is different. Israel knows it can’t sustain a long war as they saw with gradual destruction of their infrastructure. It’s too small both land wise and military personnel wise. They asked DJT to stop the war.
if the conflict resumes it will likely involve Russian and Chinese indirect participation. This is more bad news for Israel. Israel pretty much has played its hand and I don’t think they can bring more to the theatre other than nukes.
conclusion- the days of colonialism and domination by force is over. You’ve seen USA in decline with organizations between countries being formed without it. Realizing this, they resort to the old tactics of destabilizing, regime change, sanction, bullying to regain their influence. This will not work anymore. Israel following in the footsteps and is a proxy in this case.

Yeah, well. Keep your head in the sand then! No skin off my nose, but they did give the information to the Israelis. There’s no two ways about it, whether you can get your head around it or not!
