Composite courtesy of Thai PBS World Amidst a whirlwind of controversy, political activist Dr Tul Sittisomwong has lodged an official objection against the promotion of two senior police doctors linked to Thaksin Shinawatra's contentious stay at the Police General Hospital. The focus is on Pol Lt Gen Sophonrat Singhacharu and Pol Lt Gen Thaweesilp Wechvitarn, whose names appear on the latest promotion list despite ongoing scrutiny. The proposed promotions would see Sophonrat ascend to deputy national police chief and Thaweesilp take on the role of assistant national police chief in charge of medical affairs. This list has been publicly shared, allowing for the submission of objections regarding any discrepancies. Dr Tul strongly opposes the advancements, citing past violations of medical ethics determined by the Medical Council of Thailand during Thaksin’s extended hospitalisation. Adding fuel to the fire, both doctors are currently under criminal investigation by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC). Despite these allegations, no disciplinary measures have been enacted by the police force thus far, which has only intensified the public criticism surrounding their inclusion in the promotion roster. Dr Tul insists that their involvement in the scandal should preclude them from advancing within the police hierarchy. The unfolding situation has ignited debates over ethical standards and transparency within police promotions. Many in the public arena question whether such advancements are appropriate given the ongoing legal proceedings and previous ethical breaches. The petition by Dr Tul aims to halt these promotions and urge further accountability within the police establishment. This controversy has shone a light on the broader issues of integrity and justice in high-profile cases, particularly where influential figures are involved. The spotlight on these promotions is a critical juncture for the police force, as it navigates public perception and the demand for transparent processes. Summary: Dr Tul Sittisomwong challenges the promotion of police doctors involved in Thaksin Shinawatra’s hospital saga, citing ongoing ethics violations and corruption investigations. The situation underlines concerns about transparency in police promotions, drawing public scrutiny and calls for accountability. Adapted by ASEAN Now from Thai PBS World 2025-07-08

July 8, 2025Jul 8 Good doctors, helped Uncle Taksin, thus get promotion. Did Uncle bestow any other "benefits"?

Most likely Thaksin arranged these promotions. He was in the police force previously and has the highest level of connections there. Given the controversy over his time in that hospital and the fact everyone knows his scandal using the hospital to avoid any real prison time. I would be most inclined to believe Thaksin had a hand in getting these guys on the promotion list. I do hope that it is stopped but unfortunately, there is nothing anyone can do to prevent it without and real charges being laid against these men for their assistance in Thaksins scam.

Money or promotion.... corruption works two ways.
July 8, 2025Jul 8 Popular Post If they are promoted and then sacked because of the Thaksin scandal they will probably receive a higher pension from the new promotion.
July 8, 2025Jul 8 What happened to innocent until proven guilty? They could be promoted then demoted if proven guilty.
July 8, 2025Jul 8 It would be nice to think the investigating committee would see through this as further evidence of Thaksin's guilt. Being promoted while under investigation for corruption, jeez. We can live in hope, but very unlikely anything will come of the enquiry, or this objection.

July 9, 2025Jul 9 This patient is not going to cure itself - and i am not talking about Thaksin. Sadly, being a hardcore realist, my conclusion is that democray will never take hold here. And the combination of reverence to the Crown, Buddhist pacifism and the very effective organs of repression means a sucessful uprising is not realistically possible. I think we just have to get used it. ( << bitter words for a lifeling change-maker)
