Trump Dishes Out 36% Tariffs in Shock Move Against Thailand

Tariffs had nothing to do with the great depression.  Simply the elite, knocking down the middle class and taking over the industrial revolution.   A well planned, lend out money, then call the debt, they couldn't repay, and steal their businesses.

They even did a test run in 1917 to see it would work, success.   So planned and perfected it for 1929's crash.

Wrong again, as usual. Typical MAGA moron.

Smoot–Hawley Tariff Act

The Tariff Act of 1930, also known as the Smoot–Hawley Tariff Act, was a protectionist trade measure signed into law in the United States by President Herbert Hoover on June 17, 1930. Named after its chief congressional sponsors, Senator Reed Smoot and Representative Willis C. Hawley, the act raised tariffs on over 20,000 imported goods in an effort to shield American industries from foreign competition during the onset of the Great Depression, which had started in October 1929.[1]

Hoover signed the bill against the advice of many senior economists, yielding to pressure from his party and business leaders. Intended to bolster domestic employment and manufacturing, the tariffs instead deepened the Depression because the U.S.'s trading partners retaliated with tariffs of their own, leading to U.S. exports and global trade plummeting. Economists and historians widely regard the act as a policy misstep, and it remains a cautionary example of protectionist policy in modern economic debates.[2] It was followed by more liberal trade agreements, such as the Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act of 1934.

That's one way to start a conversation, but not one if you want someone to care what follows.

Tariffs & excise taxes work and financed most of the federal budget, up until they figured out in 1913, what the hell, lets tax their income also.   They're so dumb, they'll do anything we say.

The rest is history to the tune of $36+ T in debt.   That's what happens when you have 535 criminals running the govt to enrich themselves.

Almost 50% of Congress are millionaires.  That's quite a wee bit more than the percentage of millionaires of the subjects they represent.

Let that sink in :coffee1:

Thailand should now recognise that America cannot be trusted, ever again. It should look for new customers and get economically closer to China. Maybe it should increase its prices even further on certain food products such as rice and shrimp and really let the American consumer suffer even worse, remembering that the American consumer is the American voter.

Maybe also put a high tax on revenue generated from Thailand by American tech companies such as that generated from Facebook, Google, Amazon ads, Netflix, Apple, etc.

No....this can't be correct.....can it?

Trump is on record (at a press conference),  stating his belief that tariffs are paid by the exporting country, and not the importer

The more Americans pay for there goods will mean the less money they have for holidays to Thailand.

i am happy about it.

The point is how these high 35% tariffs will impact the Thai working classes and the Thai economy and its exports. It will be massive and will effect many. Globalisation has been very good for South East Asian countries giving a higher standard of living for more folk.. With less exports to the USA and higher prices over there on Thai exports this will reduce demand for such things.

The only possibility as some FT writers and others are suggesting is if Europe, Latin America, China, Asia and SE Asia can circumvent US Trump and increase their trades outside the US hegemon. A kind of substitute approach

It's all about the Thai tariffs on peanut butter.

Imagine you own or run a domestic/international business and you're supposed to make investment plans for the next four or five years and you have to deal with this sort of unhinged chaotic thinking. Nobody can run a business in this environment.

For Thailand, read "The rest of the world".

perhaps, also for "America" read "The US Republican party" - but the way they are gerrymandering districts, they may continue to hold power with an ever decreasing share of the vote, in which case the original works.

It is hard to avoid the largest purchasing economy in the world.

You understand the US is the largest financial economy in the world? You must not pay attention to the news. Trump said if Thailand wants to increases prices the tariff will go up more than the 36%. China already owns half of Thailand.

There is nothing unhinged about a US $3.5 trillion dollar deficit.

Thailand will be in stormy weather with these high tariffs.

Look here, what Potus said to the new tariffs in general:

Republicans against Trump on X: "Trump has no f***ing idea what he’s doing with trade deals and tariffs. He just says whatever pops into his head at the moment. A total clown and buffoon. https://t.co/3zxaaN3Fil" / X

Does that read make you feel better? What ever you read has zero effect on what Trump does. The tariffs are a fact, no matter what you read. Get use to it.

Does it?  What does China own?

Right now you have millions and millions of people who are so horrified or so aghast by what’s happening. They feel like they have no leadership. They feel like nobody is articulating what they’re feeling and they feel like nobody is doing anything about it and telling them where we go from here. Those people need and deserve leadership. We don’t really have an opposition party.

Trump would not be where he is without the deep state or a similarly sinister organization or group of very powerful people who put him in that place, and are allowing him to conduct these extremely destructive economic policies. As reckless and as poorly thought out as all this seems, I think it's actually deliberate economic sabotage.

Unfortunately the average American and the average person without wealth throughout the world will end up being the victims. Tens of millions of Trump supporters will be very surprised at the end result, and it won't be a pleasant surprise.

Very few people truly understand just how sinister and ignorant Trump is.

You have lived in Thailand a long, long time. Why do you care? Do you know Donald Trump personally? How do you know he is sinister? Because you read it somewhere in the fake news? I live in rural Isaan and I see absolutely no way this will ever affect me. You live in Thailand, live like a Thai. Stay away from the fake news and enjoy your life.

11 to 14 percent of Thailand's population are considered ethnic Chinese. Have you ever been to Chinatown?

Another newbie bot that does not understand economics or US law. The president cannot create tariffs, the whole thing is a bullying bluff. Have a taco and wait out the bluster.

Well, most rice farmers in Thailand aren’t exactly rich—so a higher rice price would be a good thing.

Higher rice prices will NEVER flow down to the farmers. The millers and middle men take it all.

How much land do you own in Thailand? Look up the definition of trade deficit while you are figuring out how much land Thailand allows you to own.

Er, I am well aware of the ethnic background of some Thais.

You said "China owns half of Thailand.". Not "11 to 14% of Thais have an ethnic Chinese background".

They are Thai.

So what does China own?

It was a stupid comment insinuating that the Chinese own Thailand. They don't.
