Yes, because trade policy is part of foreign policy. Thailand should know that having received exceptionally favored access to the US market for decades. Thai governments, one after another, since 2010, have thought they could get away with becoming a de facto Chinese economic satellite and still get special access and reduced tariffs along with trade subsidies to the US. I have to think choosing the Gripens over the F16s just might have been the last straw.

Thailand taxes all EU and US articles too heavily... So why complain if other countries are doing the same??

Funny, I'm thinking Trump's arrogance had the largest role to play.

I'm thinking Thai arrogance had a role to play. Well they've got a few more weeks to recognise Trump has more economic power and the only way to reduce the 36% is to accept Trump has the upper hand. Like Vietnam has done. Vietnam will surge whilst Thailand will suffer.

I’m not sure of Thai arrogance but agreeing a better tariff deal will take some major and decisive action by Thai authorities. Respectfully, not something they are well known for.

Adding to Thailand’s predicament along with a large trade surplus with the US is the huge trade deficit they have with Trump’s nemesis, China.

Quite a lot to unravel for Thailand, if indeed, they wish to do so.

Only if Thailand knuckles under...

Like if we could buy a new Corvette in Bangkok for list plus shipping.  Not list plus shipping plus 200%.

Nothing to do with that. Trump has done TACO after TACO on tariffs, without any deal forthcoming.

Remind us how many trade deals he has done since he started announcing tariffs 6 months ago.

Hint, you don't even need 2 hands to count them.

Adults in the room would rather they be done right, than to be done fast.

You can't fix decades of bad trade policy in 6 months.

He still has no authority to impose tariffs. Sit back, have a taco and wait.

All this Trump circus and to make it look like all this predicted big US inflation is being blamed on all these foreign states taking advantage of the big and wonderful US.

Let's wait for the final result  :coffee1:

Given my Thai Tariff Shock Syndrome (T2S2) every time I buy something from the US to be shipped to Thailand - well?  I'm none too sympathetic.  Not even a little bit.

There is a way out of 37% tariffs for Thailand.  Drop their tariffs on US goods imported into Thailand and I 100% guarantee Trump will reciprocate.  That's what the tariffs are meant to do - shock & awe high tariff countries into dropping their tariffs on US goods.

Yeah - like adding 5 Trillion USD to the freaking National Debt.  Fyi - he's losing a significant portion of those who supported him.  Not the true dyed-in-the-wool MAGA types, but the conservatives, independents, and moderate liberals who voted for him based on his campaign platform promises to engage in fiscal responsibility and end wars.  What do we get?  A Big Beautiful Abomination of a funding bill that removes the debt ceiling and add 5 freaking Trillion USD to the debt.

They could even risk an increase in the 36 percent tariff to 46 percent, should Thailand join BRICS, with Trump's just announced 10 percent tariff on BRICS members.

You can now buy a right-hand drive Chevrolet Corvette Stingray courtesy of a company called Lumen Automotive, and it costs less than £95,000.

Right-hand drive Corvette available to buy in the UK

All-out American muscle car costs less than £95,000

6.2-litre V8 engine with 475hp

Head-turning exterior design

Quicker to 60mph than a BMW M4 Competition

Edit:  £95,000.  That's why the UK will get reasonable tariff terms.  Thailand, not so much...  A new 'Vette in Thailand is probably $400K if you can find one.

I can’t think of any?
Which businesses would close down in Thailand without American consumers?

They make up less than 2% of tourists to Thailand.

A big part of Trump's election campaign were tariffs. He's keeping yet another campaign promise. You can buy into the democrat/MSM doomsday rhetoric or wait and see what happens with the US economy.

Yes, Trump absolutely campaigned on slapping tariffs on virtually every country. He's proposing a delightful "10% baseline tariff" on most imports, with "specials" up to 40% for nations he deems naughty, like various BRICS members

Did he "tell the truth" that this is a tax on Americans? Not! He preferred to spin it as other countries paying up. Meanwhile, economists universally agree that Americans actually foot the bill through higher prices and struggling businesses. So, no, he didn't exactly highlight that fun fact for the voters.

You are aware that thailand exports many things to the US? Now them and seemingly the rest of Asia lose out to the biggest market on earth. That will affect thailand quite a bit
