Thailand taxes all EU and US articles too heavily... So why complain if other countries are doing the same??

Funny, I'm thinking Trump's arrogance had the largest role to play.

US will levy a 36% import tariff on all Thai goods starting 1 Aug, completely independent of current product-specific duties. Goods rerouted via 3rd nations to dodge these tariffs face even higher rates. If Thailand boosts tariffs on US imports, that increase will add up to 36%

Economist indicates 36% tariff underscores US's displeasure with negotiations with Thailand, pol instability & lack of decisive leadership & more damaging - a win-win approach is difficult, and Thailand may need to find a give-and-take solution by considering all impacts.

Lots of countries have become dependent on decades of US largess.  It's going to take awhile to convince them the gravy train is over.  And many are going to scream like a baby that's been denied their ice cream cone.

You think this is sustainable?

A lot of Americans need to be shaken awake, too.  It's gonna suck, but the addiction to cheap stuff from overseas needs to be broken.   Best done by a guy in his second of 2 terms...  I'm as guilty as anybody, buying a 65" big screen because they've become affordable, when my 50" was perfectly adequate.  Keeping in mind I grew up when a 20" screen was considered a luxury.

If US could offer anything worth to buy coutries around the world would do.

But because the offer is limited the deficit is growing.

That khaosod post to X indicates Thailand will refuse to budge on the transshipment issue because China won't let them. If so, Thailand is about to get thumped hard. Thailand started openly advertising six or seven years ago for Chinese companies to move to Thailand to escape US sanctions or tariffs. Thailand has been warned about this repeatedly. So has Vietnam, which apparently was able to settle the issue.

I think this tariff is the result of previous governments taking advantage of America and not caring about the practice of balancing trade between countries. It's called Karma.

Trump's tariffs will make everybody poorer: Workers, exporters, importers as well as consumers. There are no winners!

Nothing that this circus clown does should shock anyone anymore, at this point, he has no idea what he is doing, he is undermining America credibility to such a spectacular degree, and he's making America less relevant by the day.

Mark my words, nations are going to continue workarounds, BRICS is going to get larger and more powerful, and now represents more than half the world's population, and the US will become a significantly less relevant under this goombah.

And as an American I will be able to say I'm happy about that, I think American foreign policy has been horrific for decades now. I think the overreach has been stunning and I think the fake morality has been inane, and I do believe that the planet is very tired of it at this point, especially with this guy and his daily ridiculousness and his very uninformed arrogance.

For Europe, the question is not simply whether the US remains a powerful ally but whether it is still the right one. A closer relationship with China now offers distinct advantages – an idea likely to be discussed at the EU-China summit in July. While European attitudes towards China remain cautious, as demonstrated by recent tariffs targeting low-cost imports from platforms like Temu and Shein, Europe’s strategic reflex still defaults to the US, especially in finance and defence. That reflex, born of history, is increasingly out of step with Europe’s long-term interests.

The US has long pursued a consistent global aim: to preserve its position as the world’s sole superpower. But under President Trump, US global leadership has taken a darker turn.

Basic democratic principles are being eroded.

Human rights, academic freedom and social justice have come under sustained assault.

From unconditional support for Israel’s devastating assault on Gaza – widely condemned as a genocide – to greenlighting a newly launched war on Iran, mass deportations and the dismantling of university funding, Trump’s United States is actively undermining the values it once claimed to champion.

I'm thinking Thai arrogance had a role to play. Well they've got a few more weeks to recognise Trump has more economic power and the only way to reduce the 36% is to accept Trump has the upper hand. Like Vietnam has done. Vietnam will surge whilst Thailand will suffer.

Personally I'd rather see coutries stand up to him rather than cave in as you say Vietnam has done.

More prostitutes can fill the gap

Only a certain mentality would think that every country has the same economy of scale.

Many western countries use domestic consumers, without their consent, to fund sales in overseas markets.

The next is 10% more because of BRICS..they deserves it

I have rather enjoyed the sad reality. Here we have trump stating the USA has been taken advantage of, ripped off. And then we are faced with the documented reality of the USA being the wealthiest country on this globe. Poor, poor USA … I will not even give a nod to the documented times US companies have taken advantage of the poorer exporting countries … fair trade? I am all for it but supporting the chainsaw policies/actions of trump and his ilk? Nope …

The same could be said for Thailand imposing massive tariffs on European car manufacturers. I've always wanted to buy a BMW or Mercedes, but to pay 50% more for a car is plain ass stupid. So we are stuck with boring Toyotas, Hondas and to some extent Ford (which can't deliver parts on time).

Malaysia has zero tariffs on imported EVs. I mean sometimes it's unfair, and I get it,  but Thailand has decided to fund its government through imports and you're getting punished big time for buying anything outside Thailand, unless it comes from China for some strange reason.

..but there're talks now between Thailand and the European union on changes to tariffs so this can obviously change.

I agree with your sentiments but please leave Lux out of it. Lux is manufactured by Unilever, a British-Dutch company. It is not American.

Why you not try to answer my comment?

Vietnam set 0% tariffs on US goods, and agreed to import more from the US, yet Trump still slapped a 20% tariff on imports from Vietnam.

Why would any country be willing to do a deal with trump the crook, when it is clear it is a one way street with him?
