Thailand Tightens Grip on Ride-Hailing with Tough New Rules

Thailand's Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA) has introduced stringent regulations for ride-hailing services. All drivers must now register their vehicles as public transport and have a public transport driving licence. These new measures are set to take effect 90 days after the announcement on 9 July.

A drug dealer in Rayong province was arrested after a police chase ended with his vehicle crashing into the sea. The suspect attempted to flee authorities when approached, but his escape was thwarted when his car crashed into the ocean following a failed manoeuvre to avoid pedestrians.

A 79-year-old woman was savagely attacked and killed with a machete while sitting outside her family-run shop in a quiet village in Janghan district. The suspected assailant, a 49-year-old man described as mentally unstable and possibly under the influence, was restrained by local residents until police arrived.

New COVID-19 Sub-Variant XFG Emerges in Thailand

Thailand has detected a new sub-variant of COVID-19, known as XFG, or "Stratus," with 23 infections recorded since April, according to Dr. Yongyos Thammawut, director-general of the Medical Sciences Department. This development comes as the World Health Organisation (WHO) designated XFG a variant to monitor on 25th June, highlighting its rapid spread and potential to evade the immune system. There is, however, currently no evidence that XFG causes more severe symptoms than other sub-variants.
