In the early hours of July 8, a coordinated police operation in Bangkok led to the arrest of 36-year-old Samrit, who was caught with a staggering 2.75 million methamphetamine pills hidden in his vehicle. The suspect was intercepted while driving a black Mitsubishi Pajero, allegedly transporting the drugs to be distributed across Bangkok.

The operation, spearheaded by Police Lieutenant General Siam Boonsom and involving various law enforcement units including the Military Police and the Army’s special operations centre, was the result of meticulous intelligence work. Authorities suspected that shipments were being moved from the city’s outskirts to a specific location in Ramkhamhaeng 112 alley, Saphan Sung district, a known hotspot for drug storage and distribution.

At precisely 1.40am, officers noticed Samrit's vehicle, bearing the licence plate 7 กต 5060, entering the district. Its noticeably heavy load aroused suspicion, prompting an immediate search that uncovered 11 sacks filled with methamphetamine pills in the car’s rear compartment.

Upon arrest, Samrit admitted to his role in the narcotics operation, stating it was only his second time acting as a courier. For each delivery, he was paid 30,000 baht (approximately 920 US dollars or 32,000 Thai Baht). He revealed that he received orders from superiors for the specific locations where the drugs were to be delivered.

A background check on Samrit exposed a troubling history, with previous offences in 2015 and 2022 for possessing category 1 narcotics with intent to sell. His current charges include distributing methamphetamine without authorisation, a serious offence that highlights ongoing concerns about drug trafficking within the region.

The police emphasised that such illegal activities are not just criminal offences but also significant threats to public safety and national security. The suspect has now been transferred to the Narcotics Suppression Bureau, where he will face further legal proceedings.

This arrest is set against the backdrop of Thailand's ongoing battle against drug trafficking, as authorities continue to crack down on networks that funnel narcotics into the capital. The operation not only underscores the relentless efforts of the police but also serves as a strong warning to those involved in the illicit drug trade.
