Thaksin Shinawatra, Thailand’s former prime minister, voiced his perspective last night on US President Donald Trump’s recent ultimatum, which set an August 1st deadline to resolve the 36% tariff imposed on Thai exports. Speaking to Amarin TV, Thaksin described the move as a strategic negotiation tactic rather than a definitive policy shift.

He revealed discussions with Trump’s associates, indicating the unchanged levy from April 2 is a hard-line approach, with Trump likely to negotiate for favourable terms. Thaksin expressed confidence that while some concessions might be necessary, Thailand should not expect significant losses.

Reporters asked whether Thaksin's connections in Washington were still active. He responded humorously, “I didn’t leave Thailand. We just talked a bit via Zoom.”

Addressing concerns about possible economic impacts and declining consumer confidence, Thaksin noted that numerous countries are similarly affected. He mentioned that a committee will seek solutions during the current religious holiday period, Asalha Puja Day.

On potential tariff reductions, Thaksin confirmed that Thailand had submitted a new proposal, even as Trump’s letter arrived without a settled agreement. However, he remains optimistic about achieving a resolution within the extended timeframe.

In a parallel development, Trump’s tariff measures are not limited to Thailand. He escalated tensions with Brazil, announcing a 50% tariff following disputes over former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro’s trial. Trump criticised Brazil’s actions against free elections and media, initiating an unfair trade practices investigation.

Trump also targeted other nations, including the Philippines with a 20% tariff, and 25-30% tariffs on countries like Brunei, Sri Lanka, and Moldova. Brazil, being the 15th largest trading partner with the US, faces significant strain with this latest imposition.

Simultaneously, Trump conveyed optimism about reaching a trade agreement with the European Union, predicting imminent announcements. EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic indicated progress, hoping for a resolution within days.

This flurry of tariff actions affects global markets, with a broader trade war potentially hindering economic forecasts. Trump’s aggressive stance underscores a strategic push toward renegotiating existing trade relationships, aiming for outcomes seen as beneficial to the US.

Dream on old man, you're getting off lucky with just 36% - it would be far more if I had my way and you'd be forced to sell your land as well.

A robber with a gun saying "Your money or your life" is also a negotiation move, not that Thailand doesn't fully deserve it.

The felons only game is extortion. Extorting the world after successfully extorting every bald white congressman in America.

Perhaps Thailand wants to trade for animals that never see the light of day at meat factory?

Perhaps Thailand would be interested in US soybeans soaked in chemicals from seed to bean?

Or how about importing massive Chevy SUVs and phase out the trains.
