The National Police Chief, Police General Kitrat Phanphet, has led a senior delegation to Japan on an official visit aimed at enhancing cooperation between the two nations in tackling transnational crime, cybercrime, call centre scams, and human trafficking.

The visit, which took place from 6–9 July, included high-level meetings with Japan’s National Police Agency Commissioner General Yoshinobu Kusunoki and Thai Ambassador to Japan Vichu Vejjajiva.

During the meeting with Commissioner General Kusunoki, both sides discussed measures to combat cross-border criminal activities, including online fraud, cyber threats and international scam networks. General Kitrat expressed gratitude for Japan’s support in approving the deployment of a Thai police liaison officer to be stationed in the country.

As part of the itinerary, the Thai delegation visited the Shinjuku Police Station, the largest in Japan, which employs approximately 700 officers and civilian staff, including 100 female officers. The group observed operations across various departments, such as organised crime investigations and emergency response coordination.

General Kitrat and his team also held discussions with Mr Hideaki Oita, Director of Cybercrime Investigation, to exchange information on digital forensics and data analysis. The Thai officers were introduced to Japan’s cyber forensics units, which assist in examining and preserving digital evidence, ranging from mobile phones and hard drives to vehicles.

The delegation toured Japan’s Cyber Attack Response Centre, which monitors and responds to cybersecurity threats affecting national infrastructure. The centre plays a critical role in detecting, analysing and preventing cyberattacks on key public and private sector systems.

In addition to law enforcement meetings, General Kitrat met with Ambassador Vejjajiva to discuss broader bilateral issues, including immigration concerns, human trafficking and the movement of Thai nationals and Japanese tourists between the two countries.

The visit concluded with a renewed commitment to strengthen collaborative mechanisms in combatting emerging crimes and to adopt best practices observed in Japan. According to Thai police spokesman Pol Lt Gen Achayon Kraithong, the knowledge gained will be instrumental in elevating the standards of policing, especially in digital investigations and public safety.

“This visit has provided valuable insights and strategic ideas that will help enhance the efficiency and professionalism of the Royal Thai Police in serving and protecting the public,” said General Kitrat.
