No,  that's far more a British thing.

That is sinsod

Not. Small money, nothing demanded by wife or parents

Sin sod for a farang is 200k and up (5k USD)

100k is nothing. Many farang burn thru that in a month or two. For me it's three. It's nothing.

IIRC sinsod is only payable for a wife who is a virgin.

While technically true, that's nonsense.

In fact,  so many young pregnant women are married these days with no intention that the marriage will live on in perpetuity. The husband who is also the father sort of agrees to stay with the woman and the child's early years and provides a bit of money. These up-country marriages rarely last. The money is basically for the damage done and to take care of the child and woman.

Did I understand it right you want to buy a wife? Like a cow or a pig?

God sake! Is it really possible that this Old White Man attitude is still alive?

If you look for advice ask the Don. He's the dealmaker. At least he thinks to be.

Ohh come on man! foreigners who give monthly stipends to Thai girls and pay sin sod for marriage are buying their wife also. You have probably bought yours as well and use some lame excuse to justify it.

Sinsod was never mentioned to me.

Having given her a house and car, it's the same as sinsod anyway.

NO... I am and was not stupid enough to pay a sin sod or even to marry a bar girl. Mine was a career woman who now makes almost as much as I do and will soon be running the government office. Family basically paid us for marriage with land and house as wedding gift. So we have a farm that also pays out to us.

What I'm getting from this thread, and what I have known for a long time, is that marriage is 90% about finances and maybe 10% about love (whatever that is).

And you can make all the BJ jokes you want. Marriage is not a long-term short-time gf.

You're just in a different scenario than most. You must have high status, because women will generally never marry down. Since marriage is 90% a financial arrangement and 10% love at most.

So you managed to get a higher status woman, which is not easy for most retired farangs to do in Thailand.

But it still proves that marriage is mostly a financial arrangement, even if you're not paying out. There's no way a woman with status will marry someone who brings little to the table.

So you didn't marry down as most. But you need to be at a certain level to do that.

And it's mostly all about the bling. What "seals the deal" is the unspoken financial arrangement, not much else.

So you get more on a continuous basis. That shows your love is alive. Some women don't understand this, but they'll all show what they like and there's always something you can do to show you care. I get fake flowers so she'll always see them, looking alive.

A sin sod is a dowry, something used in the west awhile ago, mostly to show the parents, and everyone else, that you can take care of your wife. A woman who has previous children or been married before isn't entitled but some, mainly the in laws, will still want it. It should be given back to the couple after the ceremony but seeing this is Thailand, many in laws are greedy and keep it for themselves.

Taking care and providing for your family is a given anywhere, but it's okay, especially if you're the breadwinner, to give your wife some spending money each month. If the girlfriend isn't greedy, she won't ask for money except in emergencies, so it's up to the foreigner if they want to give them money.

Greediness here is way out of hand, and the stories about sick buffaloes and mom's teeth will continue as long as some foreigners pay. The main problem here is that some foreigners show off, handing out money to burn, and the rest see this and think we're all rich and they deserve it also. I've seen many couples in the US where the man gives his wife an "allowance" for her to use in whatever way she pleases.

Does the Sin Sod also go someway to cover the costs of the wedding ceremony and celebrations, for which the bride's family pay?

I've seen her birth certificate, it does not mention height.

Perhaps yours does.

The man usually pays for everything here. Back home it's standard for the wife's parents to pay. Anyone can negotiate anywhere, including here. If the bride's family doesn't agree, and you really love the woman, you negotiate, or you leave and find another.

That's why so many Thai women stay slim. If they stay on the farm, they can stay slim working. When they quit, and their diet includes the sugary drinks and some western food, they'll get fat like western women. Getting older and eating rice every meal, has anyone gaining weight from less activity.

Oh the groom pays? Didn't realise that.

Mine stresses out if she gets to 43 kg. Swears off the sticky rice for a while.

I won't ask about the acronym, don't know what I may get. YMMV.

It all depends on the in laws. If they're rational, they know their daughter will have a better life with a foreigner than the average local here, so they'll not ask. Greediness is a disease here that spreads. Most look at us as money, but again, there are those that think of the best interests of their daughter and know better.
