UK State Pension Payments to a Thai Spouse

I am in the UK. I was having trouble budgeting. If it was monthly it would have been better, at least it would have been the same date every month. It was a pain budgeting for direct debits which are a fixed date. I was browsing the the DWP web site and it said the pension was paid 4 weekly or you could apply for weekly so I applied for it to be paid weekly. But it came back every two weeks I did try to query it but banging my head on a brick wall is more satisfying that trying to get an answer out of a Government department. Every two weeks works fine for me, just puzzled by why not weekly.

Hmmm, never heard or read that, but even getting it every 2 weeks means more expense for them with transfers, I would have thought..🤗

I got the big C so my days are numbered  I have a small pension from when I was a salaried  guy years ago ,I am currently  trying to sort this out via a financial advisor in the UK  it sure ain't easy

Well it goes into my UK account but isn't Wise a fixed percentage. Two transfers of £200 should be the same as one of £400 or have I got that wrong? When it was cash at the post office it was weekly so the DWP are doing very nicely 4 weeks in arrears into a bank account.

Wise fees are a combination of a fixed fee plus a percentage so your two transactions would cost more than one of twice the value.

If paying by bank transfer £200 GBP would cost £2.36 and £400 GBP would cost £3.53.

Not much in it. For me having the cash coming every two weeks give me more flexibility but then I am UK based not Thai based. But even Thai based you have the option to transfer two weekly with slightly higher fees than doing 4 weekly and having better cash flow in your Thai account.

Oh did not see that bit....my Thai wife qualifies for a UK state pension, but I didn't retire till after 2016....so we are out of the game anyway.

how many years 'stamps' ( qualifying years) does she have

Thirteen........and oddly enough she didn't even have to pay.....her employer paid both theirs and her portion.

If she doesn't already have one, try to open a Government Gateway account and you'll be able to see her record and state pension entitlement.

Wow.....you are a mind reader.....in the middle of trying to sort that.

Ran into trouble though as you need UK forms of identification......unless I have misunderstood.

Come the crunch, I think I will have to write to DWP and ask for written copy of her record and have it posted to a UK address.

All seems a bit messy......and I loathe doing household admin.

slightly off topic, but do you claim 10% of the wife's tax free allowance

Pretty sure I can't......remember looking into that......and finding some reason why I couldn't.

Maybe need to have another look.....cheers.

Just had a quick look

To transfer 10% of her personal allowance to you under the Marriage Allowance, she must:

•  Be UK tax resident

•  Have income below the personal allowance threshold (£12,570)

•  Be married or in a civil partnership

•  You must be a basic-rate taxpayer

So looks like a big fat no I'm afraid......

Bit of an odd situation.....we lived and worked in Germany, employed by the UK Ministry of Defence.

So she had a national insurance number but also a  SOFA Status visa from NATO and a limited form of German citizenship......if that makes sense.

She never lived in the UK, though I have seen arguments that technically she did, as she also held a G1 Compassionate visa from the military!!!!!
