Urgent Search for French Woman Missing in Angkor Complex

Cambodian authorities are searching for a French woman who vanished while on a morning run through the Angkor Archaeological Park in Siem Reap.

 

Lisa Girard, described by friends as a seasoned traveller, was last seen near Ta Som Temple around 7:20am on Saturday, 2 August. The 23-year-old had reportedly set out alone on a 21-kilometre route through the sprawling temple complex but failed to return.

 

Witnesses have since come forward with possible sightings. One local claimed on Facebook that Girard passed his coffee shop near Sras Srang lake “around 7am something”. Another reported seeing her near the Angkor ticket office on Old Route 60, heading towards Roundabout 60, closer to 7:50am.

 

Despite these accounts, no firm trace of her has been found. A friend confirmed on Saturday night that Girard was still missing and appealed publicly for help, especially from drone operators, to assist in the search effort.

 

Police and volunteers have joined forces, combing dense wooded areas and historic paths that span dozens of square kilometres. The Angkor site, a UNESCO World Heritage-listed area, draws thousands of visitors each week, but its sheer scale and remote trails can make solo outings risky.

 

Girard’s background has drawn added attention. In 2024, she hitchhiked from Paris to Phnom Penh, passing through 15 countries over four months. She was said to have embraced Cambodia as a second home.

 

The Siem Reap Tourism Police Unit has urged anyone with information to come forward by calling 012 4024 24.

 

As concern grows, so does the urgency. With nearly 48 hours passed since her disappearance, those close to her are growing increasingly desperate for answers.
