Police in Bangkok have arrested a 43-year-old airline employee accused of scaling the walls of an exclusive housing estate to steal a Rolex watch.

Officers from Khok Khram Police Station detained Mr Thongchai Chuasuk, a tow-truck driver for a leading airline, under a warrant issued by the Criminal Court on 15 August. He faces charges of night-time burglary using a vehicle to aid escape, along with related offences.

The arrest followed a complaint filed on 6 August by a 46-year-old businessman, owner of an international export company, who reported that his home in the Ekkamai-Ramintra area had been broken into around 01.20. The intruder allegedly made off with valuables including a Rolex wristwatch valued at 900,000 baht and 80,000 baht in cash.

During the operation, police recovered the stolen watch, cash, a 9mm semi-automatic pistol and a black-grey Honda motorcycle said to have been used in the crime.

Thongchai was tracked down to Don Mueang Airport, where he was working, and later led officers to his rented room in Khan Na Yao district, where further evidence was seized.

In questioning, the suspect admitted to the burglary, saying he had resorted to theft after accumulating heavy debts through gambling on football matches.

Police said he graduated with a degree in communications before joining the airline, where he was responsible for towing aircraft onto the runway.

The case has been widely reported in Thailand as another example of gambling addiction driving otherwise ordinary employees into crime.
