A mother and her young son narrowly escaped with their lives after leaping from the second floor of a school residence when a fierce blaze engulfed the building in Samut Sakhon’s Krathum Baen district.

The fire broke at a well-known school in Khlong Maduea, opposite the Kamphaeng Phet Akiyarat Military Camp. Police, local firefighters and rescue workers rushed to the scene, supported by soldiers and community leaders. More than ten fire engines were deployed to battle the flames.

The blaze, which is believed to have started on the ground floor, quickly spread upwards, filling the two-storey residence with thick black smoke. It took firefighters almost an hour to bring the fire under control, but the house was left almost completely destroyed.

One school staff member sustained minor injuries from broken glass while attempting to assist the family. He was taken to Krathum Baen Hospital for treatment. The mother and her son, who jumped from the second floor to escape the smoke and flames, suffered only light scratches.

Speaking afterwards, the woman described the terrifying moment:

“I was upstairs resting when I smelled smoke. My son had just come back from school and was watching television. Suddenly I heard crackling noises and saw smoke seeping into the room. When I tried to leave, the way downstairs was already blocked by fire. My only thought was to get my boy out safely, so I picked him up and jumped.”

Her son added that he had heard a loud “crackling” noise moments before the smoke thickened and the fire spread.

Police at Krathum Baen station said the blaze was likely caused by an electrical short circuit, though forensic experts from Samut Sakhon are investigating the exact cause.

Fortunately, the incident occurred after the school day had ended. While a number of pupils remained on the premises, the campus was not crowded with students.
