Report Popular Tempura Chain Tenya Bids Farewell to Thailand

Thailand's tempura enthusiasts are mourning the imminent departure of beloved Japanese restaurant chain, Tenya. Known for its crispy tempura and authentic Japanese flavours, Tenya will close its last two branches at Terminal 21 and Samyan Mitrtown on 31 August, marking the end of its nearly decade-long presence in the country.

 

Launched in Asakusa, Japan, in 1989, Tendon Tenya quickly became a hit with both tourists and locals alike, expanding to over 100 locations worldwide. The brand was introduced to Thailand in 2015 by the Central Restaurants Group (CRG), with its first outlet at Central Bangna. Supported by secret recipes from Japan, Tenya captured the hearts of many, opening 14 branches by 2020 in major city malls and suburban shopping centres.

 

However, the market dynamics began to shift.

 

Thai consumers gradually developed a taste for a broader range of Japanese cuisine, and with new competitors entering the scene, Tenya's popularity started to decline. In recent years, branches began closing quietly until only two remained.

 

According to CRG, which manages several food brands in Thailand, the decision to close Tenya aligns with its 2024 strategy to focus on businesses with high growth potential. A spokesperson from CRG stated, “Tenya was one of our flagship Japanese brands, but the time has come to say goodbye.”

 

As the chain prepares to close its doors, loyal customers have less than 10 days to savour a final meal. One devoted customer expressed their sadness, saying, “It’s been part of my lunch routine for years. I’ll visit one last time before it’s gone.”

 

Despite leaving Thailand, Tenya will continue to operate in other countries where it maintains a robust customer base, as reported by Brand Inside.

 

This closure underscores the fiercely competitive landscape of Japanese cuisine in Thailand. Diners are spoilt for choice with a plethora of options, from sushi trains to ramen houses.

 

So, if you’re a fan of crispy prawn tempura, golden kakiage, or authentic Japanese tendon, it’s time to make your way to Terminal 21 or Samyan Mitrtown before 31 August.
