In a dramatic turn of events in Bangkok, a man has been apprehended for stealing over 272 lottery tickets, valued at more than THB 27,200, to settle his overdue car payments. This unusual theft took place near a noodle shop on Panya Inthra Road in the Khan Na Yao district.

The sequence of events began when a vendor briefly left the tickets with a friend while visiting the restroom. During her absence, the thief threatened the friend, claiming to be armed with a knife and a gun, before making his getaway in a pickup truck.

Yesterday evening at 6 p.m., Police Colonel Nirutchapol Yothamat and Lieutenant Colonel Jumpol Yenpathomkul, along with their investigation team, cornered the suspect, a 50-year-old construction contractor named Chanchai, at his home in Soi Khubon 19, Ram Inthra subdistrict.

Upon searching the premises, officers recovered 129 of the stolen lottery tickets. During interrogation, Chanchai confessed to the crime, revealing his financial distress as the drive behind his actions. He admitted to being four months behind on car payments and struggling with unpaid work.

Reflecting on his actions, Chanchai disclosed his internal conflict, saying, “I drove around contemplating my decision. I was anxious and unsure. I couldn’t bring myself to snatch a necklace, so I carried a knife without knowing why. I never drew it; it remained at my waist.”

After fleeing the scene, he discarded the ticket stand at Fashion Island mall and tried, unsuccessfully, to sell the tickets at a reduced price of THB 50 each.

Chanchai now faces charges of theft involving a vehicle, and he remains in custody, awaiting a court hearing scheduled for the next day.

In a related incident, a man in Tak Province was apprehended for a bold attempt to steal gold from the Wang Tokang Gold Shop in Lotus Mall. The 28-year-old suspect, a local resident, feigned interest in browsing gold items. However, his suspicious behaviour alerted the staff, who quickly informed mall security. As he attempted to flee with a gold necklace, police officers positioned in the mall successfully intercepted him.

These incidents highlight rising concerns regarding desperate measures individuals may resort to under financial pressure. Both cases are under investigation, and authorities continue to emphasise vigilance and swift action to prevent such crimes.
