Bill Heinecke, the influential chairman of Minor International Plc, one of Asia's giants in the hospitality sector, is pressing Thailand and Cambodia to quickly settle their border dispute. The ongoing tension is threatening to impact business operations sharply, affecting logistics and tourism, he stated at the Thailand Focus 2025 conference organised by the Stock Exchange of Thailand on Wednesday.

Thailand has invested approximately 50 billion baht in Cambodia, and the impact of the conflict is beginning to show. Businesspeople and tourists are reducing their visits due to safety concerns, and closed borders are hindering crucial trade logistics.

Heinecke warned that the continued discord between the two nations could significantly affect Thailand. Known as a major hub for air travel to neighbouring countries, the country could face a decline in tourism if tensions persist.

Recent deadly skirmishes, the worst between Thailand and Cambodia in decades, have resulted in over 40 fatalities and displaced thousands on both sides. Although a ceasefire has halted active hostilities, land borders remain sealed, disrupting trade and travel, reported the Bangkok Post.

Both countries are maintaining a military presence along the disputed boundary while engaging in continuous propaganda battles. Heinecke noted that the border closure has rerouted all logistics through Vietnam, which adds complexity and cost for businesses like Minor International.

Minor International, renowned for its Anantara and Avani hotel brands, operates several establishments in Cambodia. The shift in logistics also affects The Pizza Company and Swensen's, two of their food units.

By mid-year, the company, which owns 370 hotels and manages 197 in 57 countries, represents a significant part of the region's hospitality landscape. The tourism sector, contributing about 12% to Thailand's GDP, is already feeling the strain. Official figures show a 7% drop in foreign arrivals to 21.4 million this year, exacerbated by a 30% decline in Chinese visitors.

And he thinks that talk about loss in tourism will end the conflict? He better build a hotel more.
