Niphon Boonyamanee, former Deputy Interior Minister, former Songkhla Provincial Administrative Organisation president and eight-term MP, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Chinese investors from Chengdu to establish an electric motorcycle factory in southern Thailand.

The agreement, signed on 26 August with Jia Qiang, president of the Sichuan Youth Entrepreneurs Centre for International Exchanges, was witnessed by Paisal Puechmongkol and representatives from the Thai-Chinese Cultural and Economic Association (TCCEA). Officials described the deal as a milestone in attracting Chinese investment to the south.

The project, which will seek investment incentives from Thailand’s Board of Investment (BOI), aims to assemble electric motorcycles for the domestic market, beginning in the southern provinces. A key focus will be creating jobs and livelihoods locally, reducing the need for migration to Bangkok or other provinces and stimulating the regional economy.

Mr Niphon explained that the initiative followed his visit to Chengdu in May, where he invited Chinese business leaders to explore investment opportunities in Thailand’s south. On 30 June, a delegation toured potential sites in Songkhla province and concluded the area had the right conditions for investment, leading to this week’s signing.

He added that the partnership could transform southern Thailand into a hub for electric vehicle (EV) production, not only to meet local demand but also for export to ASEAN markets such as Malaysia and Indonesia.

“This project is not just about creating jobs and careers for people in the south,” Mr Niphon said. “It lays the foundation for Songkhla and the wider region to become a centre for EV manufacturing, linking to ASEAN and global markets.”
