Thirty gamblers were arrested, after police raided an illegal gambling den, operating inside a three-storey commercial building in Nonthaburi.

The raid was led at around 16:00 on 28 August, by Pol Col Chaiyachai Nathanakarn, Superintendent of Mueang Nonthaburi Police Station, together with senior officers from the provincial police and local district officials. The operation followed intelligence that the premises had been converted into a gambling den.

Officers stormed the ground floor of the building in Bang Khen sub-district, where they found men and women gathered around card tables playing pok deng, a popular but illegal Thai card game. Police seized gambling paraphernalia including playing cards and tables.

Among those detained was the alleged organiser, a man identified only as Mr Rungarun, who admitted to being the owner of the property. In total, 12 men and 18 women were taken into custody.

According to investigators, many of the gamblers had travelled from outside the province. Several told police that they had convened only that afternoon after hearing of the closure of other gambling dens in Bangkok. Just the day before, a special taskforce had raided a gambling den in Don Mueang district, forcing regular players to look elsewhere.

One gambler, who had driven from Chonburi, said a friend had telephoned to invite him to the game. “I had only just sat down to play when the police came in,” he admitted.

All 30 suspects have been charged with illegal gambling and will be brought before the Nonthaburi Provincial Court.

Authorities said the operation is part of a wider crackdown on underground gambling dens, which continue to flourish despite repeated enforcement efforts.
