What is like coming back to a country after a ban or black list?

Maybe a visa violation or being charged with a crime.  I think 1 to 5 year ban is common.   What is it like to actually return to a country after having a harrowing experience with immigration police, no doubt very traumatic.  Do people just never come back again? Is it worth it?     If you return what will immigration do when you arrive again at the border? Just act like nothing happened or question  and detain you again?
