Sumud Flotilla Leaders Linked to Hamas and Muslim Brotherhood, Israel Says

A new report from Israel’s Diaspora Ministry claims that the leadership of the Sumud Flotilla — a Gaza-bound convoy featuring climate activist Greta Thunberg alongside politicians and celebrities — is tied to Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood.

Diaspora Minister Amichai Chikli released the findings on Tuesday, stating that while the flotilla presented Thunberg as its public face, the real decision-makers are individuals with longstanding connections to Islamist groups.

One key figure identified is Saif Abu Keshk, a Palestinian activist based in Barcelona and a member of the flotilla’s Steering Committee. Egyptian authorities arrested Abu Keshk in June 2025 for leading the “March to Gaza” campaign in cooperation with Yahia Sarri, an Algerian cleric affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood and directly linked to Hamas.

Chikli argued that the flotilla uses high-profile Western figures as “cover” to obscure its extremist ties and legitimize its activities. He said the report highlights how Islamist networks are embedding themselves in global activist movements to gain credibility and support.

The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), which set sail with plans to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza, has attracted attention worldwide due to Thunberg’s involvement. However, the Israeli government insists that her role is symbolic and that the real leadership comes from groups hostile to Israel.

The revelations come amid heightened regional tensions and ongoing debates over international activism around Gaza. Israel views such flotillas as attempts to delegitimize its security measures, while organizers frame them as humanitarian missions.

Key Takeaways

  • Israel’s Diaspora Ministry report links the Sumud Flotilla leadership to Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood.

  • Greta Thunberg is described as a “cover figure,” not a central organizer.

  • Palestinian activist Saif Abu Keshk and cleric Yahia Sarri are named as key players with Islamist ties.

These aren't new or particularly surprising points.  According to its own charter, Hamas began as an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood. The official name of Hamas is the Islamic Resistance Movement.  Article Two of the 1988 charter states:

"The Islamic Resistance Movement is one of the wings of Moslem Brotherhood in Palestine. Moslem Brotherhood Movement is a universal organization which constitutes the largest Islamic movement in modern times. It is characterised by its deep understanding, accurate comprehension and its complete embrace of all Islamic concepts of all aspects of life, culture, creed, politics, economics, education, society, justice and judgement, the spreading of Islam, education, art, information, science of the occult and conversion to Islam."

Saif Abu Keshk and Yahia Sarri have for years been linked to Hamas.  Both were leaders of the recent march to Gaza that was blocked by Egyptian authorities.

Thunberg has been diagnosed as autistic and isn't very good with "details."  Her friends or parents handle the booking of flights and hotels for her.  He almost always has a companion traveling with her.  She has neither the skills nor the inclination to handle the prganizing of a major protest effort like the Sumud Flotilla.

It’s very easy to learn all of these things, yet people refuse to believe anything about Israel that isn’t bad, regardless of how true it is or isn’t.

Conversely, they somehow believe Hamas are the “good guys,” despite their continued jihad

Neither the Muslim Brotherhood nor Hamas have ever been the "good guys."

Agreed, and Israel is as pure as driven snow, 65 thousand deaths in Gaza, so far.

If that is the case they need to change their plans, it's not work since their creation in 1948, they were terrorists then as well.

On what basis are you claiming that the Israeli claims about the flotilla people have links to Hamas are untrue ?

Why don't you believe the claims ?

When you meet one ask them.

I don’t have any Hamas buddies.

And you don’t have a sensible response.

Oh look a screen shot of a graphic.

Pictorial claims.

Actually no it wasn’t.

Your response was to suggest I associate with members of terrorist organization.

I would be offended if the allegation came from anyone that isn’t an idiot

Israel made claims and backed it up with a graph giving details .

You didn't believe the claims .

Which bit of the info in the graph are you stating is incorrect ?

Drawing picture isn’t backing up anything.

Israel is making claims I see no reason to change my first comment.

Israel frequently engage in misinformation and make false claims, you admit as much yourself.

Like I said above, the garbage accusations idiots come out with is not something that bothers me.

I suggest you see if you can find someone who takes your idiocy seriously.

The drawing shows the links .

Showing which people belong to which group and who is involved in the flotilla .

Which bit of that info is wrong ?

That is yet another false claim by you .

I did not "admit " that .

Please could you retract your false claim ?

Try this.

Not believing a claim made by Israel is not believing HAMAS.

It’s a drawing Nick, it can be made to illustrate anything.

That is not proof that what the drawing illustrates is true.

If as you state, when Israel are shown to be wrong they admit it, then I have not made a false statement and I shall not be retracting my correct statement.

I’m not convinced Israel admit all their false statements, but that’s another issue.
