Radio-Canada Apologizes for Journalist's Antisemitic Remarks

Featured Replies

I was surprised this happened.  The journalist didn't hide her antisemitism behind the public cloak of anti-Zionism, but came straight out and used classic anti-Jewish tropes in a broadcast.  It seems Canadian authorities have responded forcefully, but so far I've only seen the journalist has been suspended.  She should be fired and never hired as a journalist again except by Al Jazeera or the Tehran Times.  Jews in Canada and the U.S. say that antisemitism is more openly expressed today than it has been since the 1930s.

Radio-Canada apologizes, suspends journalist after on-air ‘antisemitic’ remarks draw backlash

Radio-Canada issued an apology Tuesday and said it suspended one of its journalists after she claimed on air that “big cities” and “Hollywood” are run by Jewish people, prompting swift condemnation.

Elisa Serret was “relieved of her duties until further notice,” the French-language public broadcaster said in a statement.

During a segment of Sur le terrain that aired Monday, Serret said: “My comprehension and that of several analysts here in the United States is that it’s the Israelis, it’s the Jews, that finance American politics a lot, the super PACs, there’s really a big machine behind, so that it becomes very difficult for the Americans to distance themselves from Israel’s positions. It’s really money here in the United States, the big cities are run by Jews, Hollywood is run by Jews.”

Accusing Jews of controlling the politics and economies of other countries is considered antisemitism under the definition of antisemitism of the International Holocaust Remembrance Association.  The Government of Canada adopted that definition in 2019.

Yeah I get that but the Hollywood thing is arguably different.

Jews were the main ethnicity behind the initial creation of the Hollywood movie industry.

They flocked to it originally in part because antisemtism created barriers towards many other professions.

Jews to this day are heavily represented in it.

Saying the word "control" as if it's some kind of conspiracy theory is obviously a way to demonize something that should be seen as a fantastic accomplishment.

Does anyone complain about the Vietnamese "controlling" the nail salon sector?

Why are so many Jews working in Hollywood? - opinion

Jews do not run Hollywood. It is crucial to address, however, that, yes, the entertainment industry has disproportionately many Jewish people working in it.

Yes, disproportionate representation is a very different thing from control or ownership of Hollywood.  Individual Jews have positions of influence in Hollywood, but they don't act in concert to further a "Jewish agenda."  Jews often compete against each other.

Also, many of those identified as Jews are of Jewish ancestry but don't practice the Jewish religion or associate with other Jews.  It is the conspiracy angle- Jews acting together- that makes these claims antisemitic.

Yes.

Though I disagree with you that secular Jews don't count as Jews.

The main point is that its important to not lie about the disproportionate participation. Jews joke themselves about that all the time. To do that kills credibility and gives fuel to the Jewish control conspiracy theories.

A fun show to watch -- The Studio.

I didn't mean to imply "secular Jews  don't count as Jews."  They certainly do.  Their existence contradicts conspiracy theories which claim all Jews share a religion-based secret ideology.  Jews are nowhere near the homogenous group envisioned in antisemitism.

Jews controlled much of early Hollywood because mainstream Christian businessmen largely believed moving pictures were a disreputable fad and didn't want to get involved, leaving the way open for Jews.  Of course there were a few non-Jews involved in early Hollywood studios, such as Thomas Ince, Charlie Chaplin, D.W. Griffith and Mack Sennet,

The fact remains that American (and Canadian) Jewish organisations fund politricians who will support Israel, no matter what.

Those Xian rapturous have to have a state of Israel come Armageddon.

What happens between then and now is of no consequence to them.

Armageddon is sure getting closer, though.

Most support the existence of Israel but not all support Israeli right wing government policies.

Jews are not a monolith.

Neither are Christians.

So far there's been no update on the situation with Elisa Serret.  How long will it take before Radio-Canada decides she deserves to be fired for cause and not just suspended?  She also shouldn't be given the option of resigning to avoid firing.  Serret repeated anti-Jewish tropes as a matter of fact during a broadcast; she shouldn't be shown any leniency.

You can read a good analysis of the "Serret scandal" in The Globe and Mail opinion piece below.  Serret herself has not made any statement at all.  That's probably the best way for her to handle the situation.  Since she can't say anything that would help her, sh's remaining silent in hopes the controversy fades out in a vacuum.  Hopefully, the Canadian government won't let that happen.

The Radio-Canada controversy is not some politically correct language war – it’s far worse

...

A Radio-Canada reporter used words on air that were uninformed, unresearched and wildly conspiratorial. It was worse than offensive – it was factually wrong.

Ms. Serret made a series of baseless claims, expressed clearly and with confidence, and by all appearances, under the impression that rather than trafficking in an ancient libel, she was doing journalism.
