Charlie Kirk Killing, Spurs Foreign Disinformation Push

The assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk has unleashed a surge of false claims online, with U.S. adversaries Russia, China, and Iran seizing on the killing to spread disinformation.

Between September 10–17, Charlie Kirk’s name appeared more than 6,000 times across state-run media in the three countries, according to NewsGuard. Analysts say coordinated propaganda campaigns quickly filled social platforms with misleading narratives, aiming to erode trust in U.S. institutions and inflame political divisions.

Russian-linked channels on Telegram falsely claimed Kirk had been listed on Ukraine’s Myrotvorets database of pro-Russian voices, while the Kremlin-tied group Storm-1679 spread a fake video suggesting Ukrainians celebrated the killing. Iran-linked outlets accused Israel of orchestrating the attack, while pro-China accounts pushed a fabricated story that the suspected shooter donated to Donald Trump’s 2020 campaign.

“The more confusion and mistrust they can inject right after a breaking news event, the harder it becomes for people to know what’s true and who to trust,” said McKenzie Sadeghi of NewsGuard.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox (R) warned that foreign bots were actively trying to “instill disinformation and encourage violence” after Kirk’s death. The accused shooter, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson of Utah, faces murder charges and could receive the death penalty if convicted.

Experts say adversaries often exploit high-profile crises to advance their agendas. “Naturally divisive moments allow foreign groups to inflame political tensions,” said Daniel Byman of the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Key Takeaways

  • Foreign influence surge: Russia, China, and Iran pushed false narratives after Charlie Kirk’s killing.

  • Targeted disinformation: Fabricated claims tied the shooter to Trump, Israel, and Ukraine.

  • Exploiting division: Analysts warn adversaries thrive on U.S. polarization to weaken institutions.

I wonder if this forum has already been infiltrated. Best to keep an eye out.

Foreign disinformation, such as the price of eggs, has become the norm.

"As far as I can tell". AFAICT.

I thought the US navy was a gold medalist for acronyms.

COMSUBCINCPAC, for example.

I think the Russians have planted 20 or so socialist bots on this site too.
