Thousands of Filipinos marched in Manila on Sunday in protest against fraudulent flood-control projects, which are estimated to have cost taxpayers billions. The scandal, highlighted by President Ferdinand Marcos in a July address, comes after severe flooding in the region. Despite the majority of peaceful demonstrations, clashes arose when groups of young men threw objects at police, leading to 17 arrests and the use of water cannons.

The controversy has intensified as reports indicate the Philippine economy lost up to 118.5 billion pesos ($2 billion) from 2023 to 2025 due to corruption. Greenpeace claims the actual figure might be closer to $18 billion. Allegations have circulated about nearly 30 House members and Department of Public Works and Highways officials receiving cash payments, prompting leadership changes in Congress, including the resignation of House speaker Martin Romualdez.

Participants in the EDSA protest, including politicians and families supported by the Catholic Church, voiced anger over funds being misused while citizens face flooding. "This is enough," declared Mitzi Bajet, a protester at the event, echoing widespread sentiment. Teddy Casino from Bagong Alyansang Makabayan emphasized the need for accountability, urging imprisonment for those involved in the corruption.

Looking forward, the implications of this scandal remain significant, with ongoing investigations and public pressure likely to influence political and social landscapes. Former protesters like Manuel Dela Cerna warn of recurrent issues, with high-ranking officials often evading severe consequences despite evident corruption. The challenge now is whether these marches will bring lasting change or follow previous patterns of limited reform.

Key Takeaways

  • The scandal cost the Philippine economy an estimated $2 billion.
  • Leadership changes have commenced amid investigation pressures.
  • Public protests demand accountability and return of stolen funds.

Ghost projects.  How can these perpetraitors ever think they could get away with that?  Easy really, they have top cover.  Follow the money.  Not very difficult if the will is there to do it.
