Starmer: Labour ignored illegal immigration concern for too long

Sir Keir Starmer has acknowledged that Labour and the wider Left “shied away” from public concerns over illegal immigration, as he prepares to introduce a compulsory UK-wide digital ID scheme.

Writing in the Telegraph, the prime minister said Labour must address “every aspect of the problem” to counter the rise of Reform UK and the broader populist Right. He warned of a “defining struggle” if mainstream politics failed to act.

“For years, Left-wing parties, including my own, did shy away from people’s concerns,” Starmer said. “It has been too easy for people to enter the country, work in the shadow economy, and remain illegally.” He called for a program of “patriotic national renewal” rooted in British values, rejecting Reform’s “toxic” approach.

The digital ID scheme will form the centerpiece of Labour’s immigration strategy, with Starmer expected to unveil details at the Global Progress Action Summit in London. He will also place blame for rising small boat crossings on 14 years of Conservative “failure,” noting that crossings surpassed 50,000 in August.

Labour has pledged a £5bn funding boost for 339 “overlooked” communities, including £1.5bn for the 75 most deprived areas, with local residents deciding how the money is spent.

The policy has drawn criticism across party lines. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch called it a “desperate gimmick,” Reform described it as a “cynical ploy,” and the Liberal Democrats said they “cannot support” mandatory ID cards.

Starmer’s announcement comes alongside the UK-France “one in, one out” pilot scheme, allowing rapid detention of Channel migrants in exchange for accepting asylum seekers with stronger claims.

Labour’s annual conference opens in Liverpool this weekend, where Starmer will defend his approach and urge voters to reject “quick-fix solutions from those who want to divide.”

Takeaways

  • Starmer admits Labour ignored illegal immigration concerns.

  • Labour to roll out compulsory UK-wide digital ID scheme.

  • £5bn pledged to “overlooked” communities.

  • Reform, Tories and Lib Dems slam the plan as gimmick or unworkable.

Can an expert on UK politics explain this to me?

A complete BS smoke screen to cover up the fact that his previous manifesto idea of cracking down on the the boat gangs is and always was a load of tosh (even if they could of cracked down on the gangs, for every one they caught there would of been another 20 ready to take their place, such was the scale of profit to be made)

The idea centres around not being to get a job without showing your ID but you cannot get a job unless you provide a NI number (which has always been in place) and cannot get unless you have residency so its just another, total waste of time and money

Starmer trying to push through the Digital ID that his mentor the war criminal Tony Bliar failed to foist on a reluctant UK populace. Using the BS excuse of an immigration "crisis".

There is a big backlash against this massive intrusion of privacy (coupled with a CBDC will amount basically to slavery) in the UK, or so it appears.

So far, 1.5 million people have signed a petition against it. Here you go:

But they can't turn off your NI number when you speak out against them.

Vs Turning off your digital ID would finish you.

Cash in hand always works avoiding id cards
