A forest patrol unit at Thung Yai Naresuan Wildlife Sanctuary has confiscated a gaur carcass and hunting weapons during a raid on a poachers' camp. The operation led to the escape of two suspects into the forest. This follows an initiative by authorities to curb illegal hunting activities in the area.

Officials launched the operation on Friday after receiving a tip-off about illegal hunting near Huay Kwa in Umphang district. The rangers, led by Mongkol Chaiphakdee, director of the Conservation and Protection Division at Protected Areas Regional Office 14, were alerted to gunshots while patrolling the area. They moved quickly to surround the location, discovering two men preparing meat at the camp.

Upon sensing the rangers' approach, the suspects managed to flee into the forest. A thorough search revealed a freshly butchered gaur carcass, three shotguns, and camping equipment. All items have been collected as evidence and will be handed over to the police to aid in further legal action.

Experts highlight the ongoing challenge of combating poaching in the region, emphasizing the importance of intelligence-led operations. Wildlife conservation groups have praised the quick response of the sanctuary staff. Despite the suspects' escape, the seizure is considered significant progress in the region's anti-poaching efforts.

Authorities plan to increase patrols and collaborate with local communities to gather more intelligence on poaching networks. Efforts will focus on preventing such illegal activities and strengthening the protection of wildlife. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with a focus on identifying and capturing the suspects.
