A bowmouth guitarfish, an endangered species, was spotted by divers off Balicasag Island in Panglao, Bohol, over the weekend. Governor Erico Aris Aumentado highlighted this sighting as evidence of the healthy marine environment surrounding the island, which is famous for its marine sanctuaries, pristine coral reefs, and abundant marine life. This rare encounter signifies successful environmental stewardship in the region.

Balicasag Island, known for its vibrant dive spots, offers a sanctuary for various marine species, making this discovery significant. The governor expressed optimism that the presence of the guitarfish could attract more tourists. Aumentado emphasized the importance of protecting marine resources to ensure that such sightings can enhance eco-tourism in the area.

In a statement, Aumentado said the repeated sighting of such species can boost tourism, attracting visitors keen to experience rare marine encounters. The regional diving community sees this as a unique opportunity, but Aumentado warned against environmental abuse. Last year, activities were halted on Virgin Island, also in Panglao, due to coral damage, showcasing the area's vulnerability.

The Virgin Island, another popular tourist spot in Panglao, is set to reopen in October. This prepares the region for increased tourist activity, potentially driven by renewed interest sparked by such rare encounters. The governor's comments underline the balance between tourism and conservation required to sustain Bohol's natural allure.

Key Takeaways:

  • Sightings like this indicate a healthy marine ecosystem in Bohol.
  • The presence of endangered species can boost local tourism.
  • Conservation is crucial amid increased tourist interest in the area.
