Kilo–class submarine

A Russian submarine operating near UK territory suffered a critical failure that raised fears of an explosion, triggering a rapid NATO response.

The 74-metre Kilo-class Novorossiysk, armed with torpedoes and cruise missiles, was forced to surface in the Strait of Gibraltar over the weekend after a major fuel system leak caused its hull to fill with diesel. Russian military bloggers described the submarine as an “explosive hazard,” with crew members reportedly untrained to fix the malfunction and lacking spare parts.

Witnesses and open-source ship-tracking confirmed heavy NATO activity in the region, with French and Spanish warships and multiple aircraft shadowing the vessel. The submarine has since been moving west toward the Atlantic, accompanied by the Russian tug Jakob Grebelsky.

Concerns mounted that the crew might be forced to pump fuel directly into the sea, raising environmental and navigational risks in one of the world’s busiest maritime choke points. A sailor aboard the vessel allegedly told Russian bloggers that “fuel is leaking directly into the hold,” warning that the situation could escalate without intervention.

The incident remains unconfirmed by Moscow, but its seriousness has drawn international attention. The Gibraltar Strait is among the most closely monitored waters globally, central to NATO surveillance of Mediterranean traffic.

The Novorossiysk, launched in 2014 and previously escorted by the Royal Navy near the UK earlier this year, highlights ongoing risks tied to Russian naval operations in contested waters. Its current state has raised both security and environmental concerns across Europe.

Key Takeaways

  • Russian sub Novorossiysk suffered a critical fuel leak near Gibraltar, creating an explosion risk.
  • NATO warships and aircraft scrambled to monitor the situation, with the sub now moving toward the Atlantic.
  • Environmental fears grow as the crew may be forced to pump diesel into the Mediterranean.
