Powerful 6.9 Earthquake Rocks Central Philippines

A powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck the central Philippines on Tuesday night, sparking fears of casualties and significant destruction. According to the US Geological Survey, the quake hit at around 10 p.m. local time, occurring just 10 kilometres underwater near Palompon and close to the city of Bogo in the Cebu province. Initial estimates suggest potential damage to poorly built structures.

Local reports indicate at least five fatalities, including a child and personnel from the local firefighting service and Philippine Coast Guard, in San Remigio, Cebu. Scenes of chaos emerged on social media, showing fires at a mall and a damaged McDonald's in Cebu province. Footage even captured beauty pageant participants evacuating the stage during the quake. The Philippine Red Cross noted reports of debris and building cracks, alongside temporary power outages in local schools.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported multiple aftershocks but later lifted a tsunami alert for Leyte, Biliran, and Cebu. Pam Baricuatro, the governor of Cebu, urged residents to remain calm by assuring them via social media that the presidential office would promptly send aid. Schools and work in Medellin municipality have been suspended pending safety assessments.

USGS estimates reveal that over half a million people experienced intense shaking across the Visayan Islands, affecting areas including Cebu, Biliran, and Leyte. Such shaking is expected to result in substantial damage to poorly constructed buildings, while well-built ones might sustain moderate damage.

The Philippines, part of the seismically active Ring of Fire, frequently experiences such phenomena. A previous 7.0 magnitude quake in 2022 in northern Luzon resulted in five deaths and over 100 injuries. Similarly, an earthquake in 2019 claimed 11 lives in Luzon.

Key Takeaways:

  • A 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck central Philippines, affecting Cebu province strongly.
  • At least five fatalities have been reported, with significant structural damage.
  • Aid and assessments are underway, with schools and work temporarily halted.

The problem with third world countries or emerging markets is their building codes and structures outdated and aren't state of the art to prevent deaths and structural damage.

RIP to the poor souls who lost their lives.....

No,

It's a lack of funds to build earth-quake-safe buildings

Or they have the money, have decent building codes but there's a high level of corruption and cheating.

Same as in Western countries

Totally true.  Just listening to a report on the radio about COVID PPE corruption linked to a member of the House of Lords.  Disgusting behaviour by these privileged leeches.  Just one example of thousands in the UK.

Give me a beach shack, don't have to worry about big cement landing on you, although corresponding tsunami might be a challenge.
