Pope Leo XIV has conveyed his condolences to victims of the recent earthquake in Cebu through the Apostolic Nuncio. The earthquake, which struck with a magnitude of 6.9, resulted in dozens of casualties. The epicenter was located five kilometers deep and about 21 kilometers northeast of Bogo City, reaching its peak impact at 9:59 p.m. on September 30.

Archbishop Alberto Uy of Cebu shared the Pope's sympathies in a Facebook post, communicating the Holy Father's prayers for the victims’ families and those affected. In the aftermath, Uy ordered a comprehensive evaluation of all church structures for safety, particularly in severely impacted regions. Parishes in northern Cebu have been advised to avoid using church buildings until they are deemed structurally sound.

The earthquake has so far claimed 72 lives. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), there have been at least 3,036 aftershocks, adding to the distress and complicating recovery efforts. Structural assessments initiated by church authorities aim to ensure the safety of parishioners and religious staff.

Experts have highlighted the potential for further seismic activity and the importance of preparedness in the region. Local communities are responding with immediate relief efforts, and safety inspections are underway. Archbishop Uy’s proactive measures demonstrate a commitment to community safety and emphasize the seriousness of structural integrity concerns post-earthquake.

Going forward, officials expect to continue monitoring aftershocks and address the immediate needs of the affected communities. Relief operations will likely expand as more detailed assessments emerge, highlighting the ongoing challenge of disaster recovery in affected areas. The response from both the church and local authorities underscores the significance of timely and effective aid in the face of natural disasters.
