Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma emphasized worker safety following reports that call center employees were allegedly forced to work despite an earthquake in Cebu on September 30, 2025. Laguesma mentioned on October 3 that communication with a regional director has been initiated to investigate the matter. The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is prioritizing the health and safety of workers involved.

Laguesma stated that the affected call center workers submitted a letter to formally express their grievances. A dialogue is scheduled for Monday to address their concerns. This response aims to maintain fairness by identifying which companies may be involved, allowing for impartial action.

The earthquake struck Cebu on September 30, resulting in numerous aftershocks. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), 3,685 aftershocks have been recorded, with more expected in the coming days. PHIVOLCS Director Dr. Teresito Bacolcol highlighted that aftershocks might persist for several weeks.

A meeting slated for Monday will serve as a platform for workers to voice their experiences and grievances. This move is part of DOLE's efforts to ensure worker protection and enable a thorough investigation. By identifying the involved companies, DOLE aims to determine necessary actions to uphold labor rights.

Key Takeaways

  • DOLE is investigating claims of forced work post-earthquake in Cebu.
  • A dialogue with affected workers is scheduled for Monday.
