NATO on Alert After Mysterious Drone Incursions Across Europe

A surge of mysterious drone flights across NATO and EU airspace has sparked alarm from Berlin to Copenhagen, with several incidents blamed on Russia and fears mounting that Moscow may be testing the alliance’s defences.

The drone incursions — described by officials as “unprecedented in scale” — have disrupted airports, triggered military alerts, and exposed major gaps in Europe’s air security.

On September 10, a swarm of Russian drones entered Polish airspace, prompting NATO jets to scramble and shoot down several aircraft — the first direct confrontation between Moscow and NATO forces since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Days later, allied warplanes escorted three Russian jets out of Estonia’s skies.

Since then, Europe has been hit by a wave of unexplained drone activity near airports, military bases and power stations. Germany’s Munich Airport was forced to shut twice in 24 hours after repeated sightings, disrupting flights for more than 6,500 passengers. In Denmark, drones flew over Copenhagen Airport on September 22, forcing widespread cancellations.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the events “the most serious attack on Danish infrastructure to date,” warning Russian involvement “can’t be ruled out.”

The same week, drones appeared over Danish military sites, including Karup Air Base, while in Germany, investigators probed sightings above a Kiel power plant and a shipyard in Schleswig-Holstein.

In response, EU defence ministers have agreed to develop a “drone wall” to detect and intercept unidentified aircraft along Europe’s borders — signalling that what began as scattered sightings may now be viewed as a coordinated threat.

Key Takeaways

  • Dozens of mysterious drone incursions reported across NATO airspace.

  • Poland, Germany and Denmark among countries hit by major disruptions.

  • EU to build “drone wall” as fears grow of Russian probing of defences.
