Trump jokes about world leaders he ‘doesn’t like at all’ at Gaza peace summit

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt — Donald Trump teased global leaders he “doesn’t like at all” during a speech at a Gaza peace summit on Monday, where the U.S. president signed a historic deal ending the war in Gaza alongside dozens of foreign heads of state.

Speaking for about half an hour before the world’s media, Trump read aloud the list of nations attending and praised many for their roles in international diplomacy — even calling UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer “his friend.” But he also dropped hints of personal disdain.

“I have a couple I don’t like in particular,” he said to laughter. “Actually a few of them I don’t like at all — but you’ll never find out who they are. Maybe you will, come to think of it.”

The moment came during a ceremony thick with awkward encounters. Sir Keir was briefly invited to the front by Trump — only to be left standing uncomfortably as the president continued his remarks. The British leader managed a polite “very good” before retreating to his spot beside Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

One leader not spared from Trump’s sharp humor was Norwegian President Jonas Gahr Støre. “We have Norway. Oh, Norway, aye aye aye! Norway, what happened?” Trump quipped, appearing to reference the recent Nobel Peace Prize snub — awarded instead to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado. “Where is Norway? I don’t think he wants to stand,” Trump added, scanning the crowd.

Tensions also flickered between Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron, whose firm handshake with Trump turned into a symbolic arm wrestle on stage. Lip reader Nicola Hickling told the Daily Mail the exchange carried veiled barbs, with Trump reportedly saying, “So you agreed?... Are you being genuine?” before warning, “I only hurt those who hurt others.” Macron, smiling tightly, shot back, “We will have to see about that.”

Despite the frosty moments, Trump offered warm praise for allies including Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Hungary’s Viktor Orbán, saying both had “stood strong when others wavered.”

As the summit closed, Trump struck a triumphant tone: “We are making peace — real peace — not just words.”

Key takeaways:

  • Trump joked about disliking “a few” world leaders at a Gaza peace summit in Egypt.

  • Awkward encounters unfolded with UK PM Keir Starmer, Norway’s Jonas Gahr Støre, and France’s Emmanuel Macron.

  • Trump praised allies Erdoğan and Orbán while celebrating the Gaza peace deal.
