A widespread internet outage on October 20 affected several major websites and applications, including Canva, Amazon, and Zoom. Users in the Philippines and the United States reported significant disruptions, with issues detected between 3 to 5 p.m. The outage primarily stemmed from Amazon Web Services (AWS), causing a ripple effect on multiple platforms relying on its infrastructure.

According to Downdetector, the affected sites include Roblox, Epic Games Store, Fortnite, Signal, Snapchat, Canva, and more. In the US, platforms such as Venmo, Prime Video, VRChat, Hulu, Disney+, and major telecom providers also experienced outages, impacting services globally. AWS identified a potential cause related to a domain name system (DNS) issue affecting its DynamoDB API endpoint in US-EAST-1.

The US-EAST-1 region is a critical AWS server hub, hosting numerous global services. DynamoDB, a cloud-based database used for fast response times, supports gaming and streaming applications, which reported increased error rates and latencies. By 6:30 p.m., AWS announced that it had "fully mitigated" the DNS issue, which helped to restore normal function to most affected services. However, error rates continued within the US-EAST-1 region.

AWS is actively working to resolve remaining issues, assuring users that most requests should soon succeed. The root cause has been identified but not fully disclosed, and AWS is processing backlog requests to ensure complete service restoration.

Key Takeaways

  • AWS outage caused disruptions across popular sites worldwide.
  • DNS issue in AWS's US-EAST-1 region identified as potential cause.
  • AWS working to resolve remaining service issues.
