Zelensky Open to Joining Trump-Putin Summit Amid Tensions

Ukrainian President Zelensky has expressed willingness to participate in a proposed summit with US President Trump and Russian President Putin in Hungary. His comments come after a tense meeting with Trump at the White House, where discussions reportedly became heated over the conditions for ending the war in Ukraine. Trump and Putin plan to hold talks in Budapest soon, focusing on the ongoing conflict.

Tensions simmered after Zelensky’s meeting with Trump, where US officials allegedly pressured Ukraine to accept Russia's terms. Zelensky reportedly emphasised "just peace" over quick resolutions. Despite the strained discussions, Zelensky showed openness to joining the summit if invited, aiming for a balanced diplomatic approach.

The suggestion of Hungary as a neutral location drew criticism from Zelensky due to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s perceived pro-Kremlin stance. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov and US Secretary of State Rubio are making arrangements for the Budapest summit. Reports indicate that Trump did not commit to providing Ukraine with additional military aid, such as Tomahawk missiles.

Experts have varied views on the meeting's implications, with some suggesting it exhibited Trump's mediation style, while others think the tension is overstated. Trump’s public commentary post-meeting suggested allowing current military positions to stand, which Zelensky is reluctant to accept, as it would mean conceding Ukrainian territory. The conflict has been ongoing since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, with Russia currently controlling significant parts of Ukraine.

The world anticipates the summit's potential for diplomatic progress. Moscow demands a complete withdrawal of Ukrainian troops in key regions, a condition Kyiv opposes. The unfolding events in diplomacy may define the next steps in this high-stakes international crisis.

Key Takeaways

  • Zelensky is prepared to join a Trump-Putin summit in Hungary.
  • US-Ukraine tensions emerged over war resolution terms.
  • Ongoing summit preparations may influence Ukrainian conflict dynamics.

Any negotiation that is to be considered real, sincere and meaningful, would have to include Zelensky.

Otherwise it's just more Donnie style theater.

Pretty obvious Trump will throw Ukraine under the bus in his attempt to get the Nobel Peace Prize.

Putin will never meet with Zelensky. If he does, it will legitimize the sovereignty of Ukraine and acknowledge that Zelensky is the leader. Putin has always stated that Ukraine is an inalienable part of Russia. It will also be hard for Putin to explain to the Russian people as he has brainwashed them that Zelensky is a Nazi. The Russian people will question why he is talking to a Nazi. Russia has to be destroyed to end the war and US must fulfill their obligation as Nato member to provide the necessary weapons like the Tomahawk missiles to inflict serious damage to the Russian military and infrastructures.

Ukraine cannot win its war with Russia and should negotiate peace terms with the Kremlin, according to Britain’s most senior army officer.

Field Marshal Lord Richards said Kyiv will not be able to drive Vladimir Putin’s soldiers out of Ukraine without the help of Nato forces – who won’t get involved on the ground.

Agreed. The last thing Putin wants to do is to be in the same room with Zelinskyy unless to surrender.

Zelinskyy is correct to ask to attend knowing he won't be invited to make it clear to the world what kind of stupid evil game Trump and Putin are playing.

I totally agree with you but unfortunately with trump the traitor to every thing America stands for this meeting will be more of a carving up of Ukraine party. It would be awkward to have the president of a nation present when you betray him his nation and people…..some president snatches defeat from the jaws of victory in my view.there we were for less than 5% of our defense budget defending democracy supporting nato and our European Allie’s with the moneys spent staying here to…….betraying democracy nato and our earstwhile allies…..with a cartoon president dropping sh*t (in cartoon form on Americans who disagree with him)just beggers belief.

I'd jump at the chance to join, too.

But like Zelensky, I'm neither wanted nor needed at this summit.

Only difference, although I own a nice tailored suit, I am unable to dance in leather corset and heels.

And don't ask about my lack of piano recital skills!

Citation, please!

I've read the NATO charter and couldn't find any requirement to arm a third party vassal state as a proxy stooge.
