Trump Warns Zelensky: Tomahawk Missile Deal Risks Wider Conflict

President Donald Trump has indicated to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that he is hesitant to sell long-range Tomahawk missiles to Kyiv. Zelensky proposed an exchange of advanced Ukrainian drones for the missiles, which Ukraine claims are necessary to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin into peace talks. However, Trump expressed reluctance on Friday, suggesting instead that the conflict may be nearing a peaceful resolution, reducing the need for such weapons.

Earlier discussions had raised expectations of a missile sale to bolster Ukraine's defence against the Russian invasion. Trump, after a phone call with Putin, highlighted the importance of maintaining US missile reserves, questioning the necessity of supplying Tomahawks to Ukraine. This has created a shift after previous signals that the US might aid Ukraine's military with missile support.

During private talks, Trump reassured Zelensky of the potential to end the conflict, citing a recent ceasefire agreement in Gaza as evidence of progress. Zelensky expressed hope that Trump's efforts could extend to resolving the Russia-Ukraine war, despite the change in stance on missile sales. Putin, meanwhile, cautioned that such a deal might damage US-Russia relations.

Trump plans to meet Putin in Budapest to further discuss peacemaking strategies and explore options for involving Zelensky in future negotiations. This comes amidst escalating tensions and reinforced Russian attacks on Ukraine. Despite setbacks, Zelensky has focused on enhancing US-Ukraine energy collaborations, suggesting the storage of American liquefied natural gas in Ukraine as part of a wider strategic partnership.

Key Takeaways

  • Trump is cautious about selling Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine amid hopes the war will end soon.
  • Zelensky urges missile acquisition to push Russia towards genuine peace talks.
  • Future discussions between Trump, Putin, and possibly Zelensky are aimed at negotiating an end to the conflict.

If that happened, Moscow would go boom as well, and St Petersburg etc

Why would Russia risk that just because its "forced" to the negotiating table. It might do it if it faced an existential threat, but how is doing a deal with Ukraine an existential threat to the Russian Federation? At worst, it gains a few thousand square kms of toxic wasteland with an impoverished population to prop up. At best, it could do nicely out of it, with sanctions liften, opening the way for foreign investment  to flow into the Donbass. As it stands right now, if Russia was to hold its annexed territories, it would be like Turkey's holding of Northern Cyprus; forever consigned to the national treasury propping up a region where not a single Western, and probably Chinese, company will invest. They can't raise loans to pay for reconstruction and create jobs.

Of course what Tomahawks might be is an existential threat to the regime, not because a Block 5 Tomahawk is going to kill Putin. He has nothing to fear in that respect. The Americans will have total control on the targetting. The missiles would be used, wisely, to degrade Russia's economic infrastructure. Russia is a kleptocratic state. Putin is incredibly wealthy, but not because he has legitimate and successful business interests. He is a Tsarist thief. The threat to the regime would come from the Oligarch gangsters that own the factories that are gradually being destroyed.d

OK.

And, if possible...

I will move to Canada, a place where I would DEFINITELY NOT mind being, right now.

A place, Canada, where the population is civil, and were civility is something not foreign to most.

Why do humans do what is not logical, nor in their best interests, sometimes?

Are you asking me to answer this question?

There is always the unexpected.

March 22 (Reuters) - The United States has urged Ukraine to halt strikes on Russian energy infrastructure, warning that drone strikes risk provoking retaliation and driving up global oil prices, the Financial Times reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.
The attacks helped boost oil prices that have risen nearly 4% so far since March 12, when Ukraine first started targeting Russia's energy infrastructure. A further rally in gasoline prices in the United States would weaken President Joe Biden ratings and undermine his re-election chances.

You are quoting an unrealistic Hollywood film that was reviled by FEPOWs, like my Grandfather, who lived through the experience (who thought it bordered on libelous). You might as well be taking life lessons from Harry Potter or the Minions. You should look into the Russian ICBM chain of command to understand the decision making, and the current state of the Soviet-era Kavkaz-7 Armenian made system, and whether its capable of working with the new Russian stance.

I am expecting zero from you. I am merely countering your point, and not falling for Kremlin scare tactics/propaganda.

Putin knows that if the conflict widens, Russia is dead.

Best solution - Putin and co resign.

The questions are - is Putin insane enough to destroy Russia and also activate Dead Hand?

Why play chicken to find an unwelcoming answer? None of us here have a first hand read on these red button controllers. The last thing anyone wants is a psychopath believing that the best solution for the planet is a clean-slate where only a few survive, especially if that red button controlling psychopath is boxed in.

Can't live life fearing a saber rattler, sorry. Putin would act only if he knew he was already dead.
