Luigi Mangione, accused of killing a US healthcare executive, had claimed an assault by ladyboys in Thailand, according to reports. The 27-year-old sent messages to friends about being "beaten up by seven ladyboys" in Bangkok while backpacking across Asia. This incident is part of a series of events leading up to his alleged crime in December.

Mangione, an Ivy League graduate from Maryland, was an accomplished coder and consultant. Earlier in 2024, he embarked on a solo trip through Asia, where he connected with people like Italian footballer Christian Sacchini in Bangkok. During their encounter, he expressed frustrations with the high cost of healthcare in the US compared to Asia.

After Thailand, Mangione isolated himself in Japan, staying at a remote guesthouse on Mount Ōmine. The owner described him as withdrawn, and he spent his days meditating and writing, indicating deep-seated unrest and a growing obsession with US healthcare issues. On returning to San Francisco, Mangione's behavior shifted; he cut off communications and social media, with diary entries showing his frustration and a plan to target the insurance industry.

In December, Mangione allegedly shot and killed the executive outside a UnitedHealthcare conference in New York. At the crime scene, shell casings were found with words like "delay" and "deny," possibly referencing his grievances. Captured after a manhunt in Pennsylvania, Mangione has pleaded not guilty, facing the possibility of the death penalty.

He remains in custody, awaiting a court appearance on December 5, with no trial date set.
