Putin Oversees Full Nuclear Readiness Drills Amid US Treaty Tensions

Russia carried out a sweeping test of its nuclear forces on Wednesday under the direct supervision of President Vladimir Putin, in what the Kremlin described as a “planned” readiness exercise involving the country’s entire nuclear triad.

Speaking by video link to senior military officials, Putin said the exercise was part of routine deterrence measures. Russia’s Defense Ministry confirmed that land, sea, and air components all participated, including the launch of a Yars intercontinental ballistic missile from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome and a Sineva submarine-launched missile from the Bryansk nuclear-powered vessel in the Barents Sea. Long-range Tu-95MS bombers also fired cruise missiles, with Moscow declaring all objectives “successfully met.”

Kremlin footage aired by Zvezda TV showed the launches in dramatic detail, underscoring Moscow’s message of readiness as tensions with Washington intensify. The drills follow Putin’s recent update to Russia’s nuclear doctrine, introduced days after the US allowed Ukraine to strike targets deep inside Russian territory using American-made weapons.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov used the occasion to warn that the collapse of the New START treaty — due to expire in February 2026 — would create a “total vacuum” in nuclear arms control. “If the US rejects the New START proposal, there will be a growing nuclear threat,” he told state media RIA Novosti, urging Washington to “abandon its hostile course.”

Meanwhile, plans for a long-anticipated meeting between Putin and US President Donald Trump have reportedly stalled. Sources told CNN that an expected summit in Budapest has been “paused,” with Trump saying he didn’t want it to become “a waste of time.”

Key Takeaways

  • Putin personally oversaw nuclear readiness drills involving land, sea, and air forces.

  • Russia warned the lapse of the New START treaty could spark a “total vacuum” in arms control.

  • A planned Trump-Putin meeting in Budapest has been postponed amid strained relations.

The main reason why Russia wants a new START treaty is because it's unable to finance an arm race against the US! 😆

Reminds of when posts questioning the lefts assertion the war would be over(with Russia losing) in 48 hours were censored. Well its starting to seem like a very long 48 hours, isn't it?

Fact check - the war has been ongoing for 4 years. Russia did not go bankrupt, and they are winning against Ukraine. Another lefty hill to die on turns to brown stuff😅
