Trump Pardons Binance Founder Amid Crypto Controversy

US President Donald Trump has granted a pardon to Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao, confirmed by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt to ABC News. Zhao had previously pleaded guilty to a money laundering charge in 2023. The pardon comes on the heels of Zhao's involvement in advancing World Liberty Financial, a cryptocurrency company initiated earlier this year by Trump's sons, Eric and Donald Jr.

The White House stated that Trump used his constitutional powers to pardon Zhao, who faced prosecution from the Biden Administration in what the administration described as a crackdown on cryptocurrency. Leavitt pointed out that, despite the lack of fraud allegations or visible victims, Zhao was pursued by the Biden administration with a proposed sentence of three years. This, she said, was inconsistent with sentencing norms, quoting a judge noting its unprecedented nature in his 30-year career.

During the White House press briefing, Leavitt avoided addressing whether Trump’s pardon could potentially be a conflict due to the Trump family's crypto ventures. She emphasised that the president was exercising his constitutional right to grant clemency. The Treasury or the Department of Commerce redirected questions about whether this pardon might allow Binance to restart its U.S. operations.

Key Takeaways

  • US President Donald Trump pardoned Binance co-founder Changpeng Zhao.
  • Zhao pleaded guilty to money laundering in 2023, amid the Biden Administration's focus on cryptocurrency.
  • The pardon raises questions but was stated as a constitutional exercise by Trump.

Not a surprise as the Trump administration has went out of its way to help many  criminals. Just Crims taking care of crims.

Trump also pardoned, to the collective silence of our resident Trumpers, Ross Ulbricht, owner and operator of Silk Road drug marketplace, on the dark net. He had served 12 years in prison before getting a full and unconditional pardon from US President Donald Trump in January 2025. It is said he has apologized to a couple families, who lost members due to the drugs sold on his market place. A fricking humanitarian!

Another Trump criminal business partner pardoned.

$4 billion was generated for America crime family crypto projects by Zhao connected World Liberty Financial according to Wall Street Journal. Guess his $450,000 payment to lobbyist Charles McDowell who is close friend of Trump Jr. pay off big time. Wouldn't be the last of the crime family grifting business.

The criminal shyster that is Trump. must surely be as corrupt as all the other POTUS in history, combined ?

He has more than doubled his and his Family's obscene wealth in less than one year by all accounts - it happens in plain view.

I am at a loss to understand why MAGA has any supporters left - it can only be explained by the frequent fixes of nonsense offered to the misled 'cult'.

Worth a watch

I think Maxwell will be next to get a pardon , he must keep her happy,

release the Epstein files , Trump's name is all over that ,

Good question considering that the Maga movement is linked to Christian nationalism and yet stay silent to his blatant corruption and pedophilia.

Eric - Trump IS of course guilty of blatant, persistent and wild corruption. However detailed paedophilia allegations against Trump have not materialised yet. However, Trump might find himself on the rack when the Epstein files are finally seen. Dear Old Andrew is in a similar situation.

Even Trump is innocent until proven guilty, (odds on with your take though).

Trump is a total sleazebag - however did the beloved USA vote for this idiot?

Trump doesn't just consider himself above the law thinks he is the law and can do anything he wants.

The MAGA faithful are quite happy with that and will continue to be until they become a victim.

Wonder how much trump crypto got bought and by whom…….

Also wonder what Trump is getting in return for his $20 billion ‘gift’ to Argentina. Want to bet how soon Trump is going to tell us that he’s going to build a multi billion dollar hotel/resort or whatever in Argentina?

The president shouldn't be allowed to pardon anyone.

Rudi - I heard $40,000,000,000 was the sum. America first eh ??

Who did Joe Biden pardon?

Signing pardons not shaking hands. This is why he has a bad hand. He will need an auto pen at the end of his term to protect all his acolytes.

He has app. 35% of double-digit IQ US voters eating out of his hand.  Just look at his US supporters in this forum: attempts at discussions of his actions and issues turn into childish name-calling and whatabouts of Biden, Hillary, and any of the right-wing "hair on fire" topics.

I've been saying it for years: any American who makes their living getting their hands dirty that votes GOP is either grossly uninformed or just plain dumb.  He hates having to pay money for the work people do, even when it's not even his own $$$.  Rumor has it US farmers are becoming wise to him, but don't hold your breath.

On the other hand non-Americans who hate the US support him, rabidly (as it seems from the members of this forum) pleased to see him turn the country into the next Argentina, a bankrupt kleptocracy.  Hogs at the trough.
