Cracks on a mountain in Sipalay City, Negros Occidental, have authorities on high alert after they were detected in Camp Valdez, Barangay Mambaroto. Following a recent landslide, experts warn these fissures may develop into a sinkhole, prompting the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office to monitor the situation closely. The cracks, identified during maintenance by Department of Public Works and Highways workers, measure approximately three meters deep by three feet wide.

Markers and monitoring devices have been installed to detect any further shifts or erosion. The Mines and Geosciences Bureau–Negros Island Region confirmed that the cracks are due to ground subsidence, likely accelerated by heavy rain or seismic activity. The affected area largely consists of coarse limestone, raising concerns about further destabilization.

While no homes are in immediate danger, officials cautioned motorists using the national road adjacent to the slope. The public is advised to steer clear of the unstable area to mitigate the risk of additional landslides. In response to these potential threats, Benigno Cesar Espejo of MGB-NIR stated that light vehicles might still pass temporarily, but stringent safety measures are necessary.

To evaluate the slope's stability, the national road at KM167+400 will close to all traffic from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. on October 26. This closure will allow the MGB to perform essential Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Geo-Resistivity Tests. Officials continue to urge public cooperation, emphasizing the importance of these safety measures.

Sipalay City, located near the geologically active Negros Trench, experiences frequent seismic events, including a magnitude-5.1 earthquake on October 7. The investigations into the mountain's ground cracks are ongoing, as authorities work to ensure public safety.

Key Takeaways

  • Cracks in Sipalay City's Camp Valdez may lead to a sinkhole.
  • Authorities are using monitoring tools following landslides and seismic activity.
  • A crucial road will briefly close for safety assessments on October 26.
